Yeh Illmatic is deffo one of the best CD's I've got in my Collection and every selfrespecting musicfan should have this CD in his collection. Altho there are only 10 tracks on this CD, every track is a classic.

I'm gonna give this CD a 10/10

ima give it a 10..on a good day..when u first hear it it - its mind blowing...lyriclly shit is unbeliveble...the beats - just everything....but it gets old quick...only 9 tracks and ...one time for ya mind aint a classic to me....one love gets boring fast....all the other tracks are fly...i prefer alotta albums over this though simply cause the replay value aint that high after a view spins...

Yea amazing album. One of the first albums that made me fall in love with hip hop. Illmatic is an amazing album to say the least. It set the bar insanely high for Nas. I like all his albums, but Illmatic is genius. The beats are from some of the best in the game and his lyrics are timeless on every song. One of my top ten albums of all time. I heard the album and havent heard another mc that can make album like that yet. Another high point in East coast rap, Nas is the King of New York. bow down. 10/10

Content, Flow, Imagery, Production ... all on point on this joint. IMO, Nas set the bar pretty high with this one. This is one of those rare joints that you can put in and play from start to end. Hip hop head will forever nod to it.

i have no problems admitting i gave it a 6... i don't dispute that the album (in terms of status) is a classic... but personally, an album with so few tracks should ensure that they are all bangers... i like the three premo beats, the pete rock one and the one for halftime... but the rest are boring and take too much away from nas' ability on the mic... on a good day, i'd give it a 7, but that's as high as i'm willing to go on this one...

now this is an OPINION, not a fact, so if you're going to cry about this, do it quietly...

LOL ... I feel you ins... no tears, but I do have some questions ... is it your opinion that "beats" are the only thing that constitute a great LP? What about the lyrical content, you know, the actual message? I know a great beat can make the head nod and actually set the stage for the lyrics, but "imo" the lyrics are what capture the heart and mind.

I'm not beefin' or disputin' ... I'm just curious.

yeh good question... i didn't want to give the impression that i don't appreciate nas' ability on the mic... i agree lyrically that the album was definitely groundbreaking... it's just that i hate those four or five beats so much, that i can't get past them...

6 is very harsh score, it's probably closer to a 7, but it makes it more interesting than everyone saying... 10/10, 10/10, 10/10...

The album is still ill. I've bumped this album every day for about 2 years straight, in my boombox and never got tired of it. I heard someone playing this in their car while I was on the Ave the other day and I got amped up.

Because it is. There is no 'opinion' about this record. It is a 10.
you make it sound as though opinion isn't a real word...

anyway to answer bedlam's question... i like the three premo beats, the world is yours and halftime... i don't like any others...

and teknicestyles, i'm old enough to have heard it when it came out... i've never once disputed nas' part of the album, but even he can't elevate some of the music...

like i said, i don't like it... just because the album is a classic doesn't mean it is an automatic hit with everyone...

IWW is actually more NY Hip-Hop than Illmatic. Nas' sophomore album is up there with OB4CL, The Infamous, Ready To Die & lesser albums like Reasonable Doubt & Hard To Earn in terms of capturing the essence of NY at the time. Illmatic is a classic record but to me it was a "Pete Rock, Q-Tip, DJ Premier & Large Pro present: NAS" than it was a truly "Nas" record. It all comes down to personal preference in the end, but IWW is a 10/10 while Illmatic is 9/10.

IWW is wack when put next to Illmatic. The production is nowhere in comparison, there are too many guest spots, and generally I don't think it is as good as Illmatic. Could have done with being a few songs shorter too.

Illmatic 10/10 for me.

Only thing i don't like about Illmatic is that there's only 9 songs. This album should've had at least 15-16 songs. After listening to only 9 songs, he made me want more music from him. Illmatic is a classic album because of the hardcore beats and rhymes. Nas hasn't made a tight album since Illmatic. I know a lot of ya'll will disagree with me about that but that's my opinion and everybody has their own opinion. I just think Nas should've stayed hardcore and underground because when It Was Written came out, he changed and became mainstream. I think that's what made him lose some fans. I wish The World Is Yours remix was on the album. That remix is the shit. I like at the end of the remix when he's talking and he says i wanna give a shoutout to the whole fucking Queens. My man Tipster on the boards, keeping it real lord. The Queensbridge nation getting it on. Faking no fucking jacks. Fuck around and get your wig pushed back LOL. The video was hard too. and teknicestyles, i'm old enough to have heard it when it came out... i've never once disputed nas' part of the album, but even he can't elevate some of the music...

like i said, i don't like it... just because the album is a classic doesn't mean it is an automatic hit with everyone...
um, the world is yours is pete rock produced... ny state of mind is the other premo track. but youre nuts if you only like those beats...

Over rated...

Nas has much better tracks then many on here, it was like 3 good songs and the production was horrible. Alot of it sounds dated.

I think most people say this is classic just because everyone else does.

I'd probably hav 2 say that this album is slightly over rated. Don't get me wrong, it's a very dope album and a good listen, but when I first heard it I was expecting something mindblowing and amazing, but I guessed all the reviews had me thinking it was THE album. Despite that the album has no medicore tracks at all, though for me 'one time 4 ur mind' doesnt stand as strong as the others. Me personally, I find It Was Written to be an overall better album, even though some see it as more commercial. I just feel IWW is just creatively better than illmatic, and a really good listen, peace.

DR. NICK RIVIERA
07-15-2007, 06:03 PM
yeah, for me, IWW was better as a whole too

but some songs on this album are THE best hip-hop songs ever (The World Is Yours, One Love, It Aint Hard To Tell, Represent,..), and it was actually the biggest highlight of that incredible year (next to Biggie)

He wrote his lyrics when he was 17-20, so that's another shock, cuz its so good...his flow, his voice, his carisma, his lyrics are on point,,,,maybe the almost same subject matter was a little problem, maybe not...but everything is mind blowing...its Hip-Hop...love it

Theres already threads for this, ...I Am & It Was Written, just go into the hip-hop album review archive and there all listed there. But i agree with Claaa7, Illmatic is classic every track 10/10, and its DEFINITLY better than ...I Am. Its all opinions though, but dont get how you could give One Love 2/5?. Just his story telling there and the imagry alone are classic. Just listen to the lyrics and flow on Halftime, its one of my favourite hip-hop tracks ever

Life's a Bitch - 5/5

Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park) - 5/5
One Love - 5/5

My guess is he got into Nas about a year ago when he heard some of his later material and ain't feeling this type of hip-hop as much. In every review thread he give low ratings to anything Premier has produced and I actually think he rated Nastradamus higher than Illmatic

^^ I don't think it's overrated, but I do think it's the kind of album that kids are afraid to call anything other than classic. If you love it then all good, but if you don't then you can't call it classic just to fit in with everyone else.

To me it's straight 10/10 classic though. I've been listening to it for over a decade and still going....

I believe that if you care about real Hip Hop, that it is essential that Illmatic is in your collection.

Incredible album, timeless beats and rhymes with some of the illest producers ever, it represented a time that is lost, it represented East Coast coming out hard and hitting and not letting the G-Funk era take over, it represented a time of skills and love for the rap game.

Illmatic is the only good album he's done LOL. What a shame too because Nas is a great mc. The reason i don't like his albums is because of beats. He has the same problem picking good beats just like other good mc's like Ras Kass, Canibus, AZ, Nature, Cormega, Tragedy Khadafi.

damn was reading that XXL story on "Illmatic" yesterday and haven't bumped it for a while but that whole LP is inprinted in my mind to death, bar-for-bar, beat for beat, sample for sample... illest ever in one way, alot due to fact that it's 10 PERFECT songs - not a weak lyric or beat is nowhere to be seen and it's just a blessing to listen to it.

"Illmatic" is the curse and the blessing for NaS though; he delivered what is considered the best hip-hop album of all time and was hailed as the king for it and therefore nothing he's delivered after it, though alot of it being quality, has been able to live up to the expectations.

CharlesJones
02-25-2009, 05:04 PM
I agree with your 2nd paragraph. He hasn't lived up to expectations after Illmatic. He'll do a few good songs but i can't listen to his albums anymore. If he would do a album with just beats from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, that would be ill. He needs to make that shit happen and stop getting beats from these wack producers he's been dealing with. I wonder what happened to the album he was gonna do with only beats from DJ Premier. I would like to see that come out.

Hip Hop's pound for pound greatest of all time. Sadly, it will never be duplicated.

For all you people saying "it was 2 short!!!!", would you rather have a heavily bloated album padded with filler just so you save money? Or would you rather have nine tracks of pure raw brilliance that leaves you feeling fulfilled afterward? I know what I'd take.

I personally give it a 10. I can accept it being rated as a 9 as there are some flaws, but only in the production! Nas's skill on the mic will never happen again, his rhymes are perfect and you can't find one screw up at all in any of his verses. The world is yours instrumental is legendary already along with Represent. Only track I was not feeling was (call me crazy) NY state of mind. That's it, all other songs are flawless. 9 classics packed into 39 minutes.
