in 2010 does the concept of money still make sense?

when we calculate world debt, where does the trail of money lead?

Well, in order to live, you need money.

People usually don't take money for granted, but some people do. Those are the type of people who say that they don't care about money because they have it. Those are also the same people who never had to work a hard day in their life and their family is loaded with money (spoiled). But when certain unexpected events occur in one's life, that spoiled person is stuck in crucial decision making because he/she never had to think for themselves.

They can't be serious.

but what is the purpose of our monetary system?

where does the money go?
who owns the money?

i'm saying at this point does money serve any other purpose besides facillitating greed?

we can define greed as a fear of loss or not having enough.
is "running out" a rational fear?
in 2010 is scarcity real?
is there enough food, water, land and energy for everyone?

money=irrational fear based global economy.

i think it's just the opposite.
look at the advancements that would truly benefit humanity and how they are being suppressed because of money.

these come to mind.

clean renewable energy or even free energy- solar/wind/tidal power & tesla's research.

medical advancements- drugs that treat symptoms rather than cure. there is no money in cures.

desalinization of ocean water- no money in having an unlimited water supply.

i'll check it out. i read somewhere that a single i km array of tidal generators (wave power) could power the UK.

but if we can reduce what used to take up a large room into something the size of a credit card... i would assume that if resources were properly directed, we could solve the challenges of solar power.

i think you possess a raw and healthy curiosity for a lot of different things. The problem is

1. you're arrogant- you believe you're already informed or smart
2. you're lazy/lack focus- you dont really follow through on anything, so you learn basics and intermediate level shit about various subjects, but when it comes to really digging in, you give up and start filling the blanks with what makes sense to you.

This is a part of being arrogant. Instead and following through and finishing your learning im going to guess that you get interested in something else, fill in the blanks with what you find rational cause you believe your extremely intelligent, the you move on to your new curiosity.

so you have millions of real facts about various shit, thank would make you seem well informed but when you talk about those things to much (which you do cause you want to prove you're smart and have a need to prove yourself all the time) you begin delving into the bizarre, the idealistic and fantasy.

your a bizarre person, you know this, your very idealistic, and you like fantasy, so you often fill these blanks with bizarre idealistic fantasies

i like your curiosity, but the more dangerous and undisciplined aspects of your personality have turned it into a curse and an unstoppable half-ass-expert machine.

nope

but people cannot fathom LIFE without it

so much more death is delt due to the lust for it

we will never feel true freedom because of it

but if we go back to being natural beings and shed it, our children can ....if they don't replace it with something worst, so we'll leave a guide and some warnings - and as time goes on,it'll be misused, and war will follow, and conquerors faces will be carved in stone, and death will be a sport....

your second question is just silly. i mean, how could you conduct a transaction via the internet without money? you want to restrict e-commerce to craigslist trades?

is a profit based economy healthy? well as a broad measure of health, the average lifespan of people living in profit-based economies far exceeds that of people living in either state-run command economies or tribal barter-based economies so... yeah.

Lets explain this totally. This is Economics 101.

We all need and want things to live. As westerners we assign them an ever changing value based on two factors. Supply and Demand. Supply is representative value that the person "in control" of a resource thinks he should get for parting with it, and the demand is what the person who wants to obtain it is willing to give for it. Eventually a deal will be made that both parties will consider a fair amount. This is the value of the good. The amount that one person is willing to pay and the other person is willing to receive.

This is at the most basic level done through a trade. I will give you this sheep for those chickens. We agree on rough values for the involved items and we agree to trade them. Neither side is swindled because we agree to pay the price.

This however is inefficient because you can not always get trades with everyone. Not everyone wants your chickens. So eventually you conclude you need to find a resource that everyone will use as a measuring stick for the goods they need. This is called your currency. Be it a type of rock of a certain size, a hammered out piece of metal, a piece of paper, or electronic dollars.

Now you can give someone 10 dollars for that sheep which can he can spend on 3 chickens or a new coat. He doesn't want chicken, he wants the coat so now he's free to do so.

Money is simply a representative of value that makes trade easier. It has no real worth, its how you measure other worths. A pile of paper isn't worth anything. It has the potential to be exchanged for goods, but the paper isn't anything (though actually the determined cost of 1 US dollar is over 1 US dollar, so who knows...)

The problem here arises from the fact that banks create money due to the principle of loaning instead of based off an amount of resources. You see a bank takes your 100 dollars and then can loan 900 dollars out or invest 900 dollars. These loans are then put back in the bank, and well you see where this is going. They charge interest on loans which is the profit they make for making money. Because they only have to have X dollars in the bank and can put out Y dollars into the marketplace, there is a Z of dollars that are not backed up. But these Z dollars are still of value because they're just used for measuring trade between goods.

A finite amount of money is necessary though, otherwise people will realize that they're buying something for a certain amount and selling it for the same number of dollars which are now worth less each because there are more dollars. If everyone had a million dollars they wouldn't be able to buy very much stuff because the resources still have a worth.

That of course is why the government must regulate the supply of money.

Or something like that. Anyhow, without banks the economy would be much smaller and we'd all be poor, so there you go, they're a good thing, and a necessary thing.

i'm not reading it cause its long boring and has nothing to do with the discussion.

1. money is not a promise for future delivery of goods & services. it used to be that but not anymore.

2. there is a fee "debt" attached to every american dollar. this fee is for the loan of that dollar to the american gov by the fedreserve.
since the dollar is not backed by anything, this money has been created ex nihilo.

3. lifespan, well can't argue that, just wanted to hear your answer. i don't know if they correlate. we have a lot of gay parades in america... could be profit related?

but in terms of physical health...

i would factor in obesity, heart disease and cancer as a direct result of a profit based economy. cutting corners in order to make food cheap has made the food supply fattening and lacking nutrition.

big tobacco has produces a product that kills 400,000 americans a year. for profit. its not the tobacco that is particularlly unhealthy(any smoke in the kungs is bad) but its the chemical additives that make it addictive and deadly. they were added to increase profit.

i don't have a nice neat answer to an alternative system. thats why i'm asking for alternatives. what i do know is that this profit based system is not working.

if you were to play make believe could you think of a viable alternative?

I like my shitty username its consistently shitty and random. Everyone else comes up with newer shittier usernames every other day and it makes me laugh.

I'm pretty sure that was on topic, but okay Gav.

Profit doesnt make you fat. Profit sells taste over health because thats what people wanted. Once we start getting on board the health food craze it will adapt. Profit driven market is subject to demands of the masses.

you must have never tasted real food before or you wouldn't say things like taste over health.

healthy food not only tastes better but you feel better.
i'm sure people would prefer to eat meals made with real food but you know why they don't? because profits are significantly smaller.

when did people say "you know what? i wish this meal was less nutritous and tased worse. somebody should make food like that. i'd be wiling to pay less for a worse meal."

since the dollar is not backed by anything, this money has been created ex nihilo.

as long as you can pay your taxes with dollar bills then each dollar is backed by the IRS's willingness to accept those pieces of paper as payment for your public debt. are you worried about the IRS switching to the euro?

3. lifespan, well can't argue that, just wanted to hear your answer. i don't know if they correlate. we have a lot of gay parades in america... could be profit related?

your sequin lined spirit animal t-shirts are profit related... so?

i would factor in obesity, heart disease and cancer as a direct result of a profit based economy. cutting corners in order to make food cheap has made the food supply fattening and lacking nutrition.

yet your expected lifespan is still longer in these heart disease and cancer plagued "profit based economies"... why is that?

big tobacco has produces a product that kills 400,000 americans a year. for profit. its not the tobacco that is particularlly unhealthy(any smoke in the kungs is bad) but its the chemical additives that make it addictive and deadly. they were added to increase profit.

people living in "profit based economies" must make choices. alternatively, you could have your choices limited by the geographical location of your tribe or the whimsy of your autocratic government...

i don't have a nice neat answer to an alternative system. thats why i'm asking for alternatives. what i do know is that this profit based system is not working.

if you were to play make believe could you think of a viable alternative?well it's sort of like asking for an alternative to the concept of zero because you're bothered by the fact that some people have nothing. money is just a means by which humans can more easily conduct transactions. to say that money causes the exploitation that invariably occurs in such transactions is like claiming that the concept of zero is responsible for poverty or that the wheel is responsible for reckless behavior.

I'm not disagreeing that natural healthy food tastes better, but the industry is meeting the demand for taste in the cheapest way possible. But that's because unhealthy food costs less to make. Healthy food is always available, but it can cost more. Realistically the cost of healthy food is what food actually costs and the junk food is the discount shit on sale.

You're a trendy guy, thus you know that it's worth paying a little more for better shit. That's being a consumer right there. But we can't outlaw the cheap shit, because the poor would go hungry without it. Or their food would be oatmeal all day everyday and that would suck.

I don't eat much junk food, I eat a lot of fruit and some vegetables, eat a lot of lean meat, and whole grain breads, and such and drink a lot of milk and water, so I do okay. I also take a daily vitamin because its important to get all that shit in your body. The foods there, but you have to pay for it.
