HALIFAX, N.S. - The Nova Scotia government will officially apologize today and grant a pardon to Viola Desmond, a black woman who was charged and convicted in 1946 for sitting in a whites-only section of a New Glasgow theatre.
Desmond was jailed and fined after being forcibly removed from the Roseland Theatre by police.
Premier Darrell Dexter will issue the pardon during a ceremony at Province House in Halifax.
Desmond, then 32, was on her way to Sydney on Nov. 8, 1946, to sell imported beauty products when her car broke down.
She went to the segregated Roseland Theatre to kill time while it was being repaired.
