What's a good, newer film that I probably haven't seen that isn't a remake of another, probably better, film or an adaptation of a comic book, tv show or something?

The lack of originality is fucking disgusting...the big films this weekend are A-Team and Karate Kid. In 2010. What the fuck happened?

John Carpenter's "The Thing". - Favorite movie. Scary shit.

ya i've seen that one. like 10 times lol it's pretty tight and will probably be remade in the next 5 years, by a music video director and starring bradley cooper and jessica biel.

"a good, newer film"

how do you feel about the sentry ripping ares in half with his viscera flying everywhere?

A Prophet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1235166/)

Nineteen year-old Franco-Arab Malik El Djebena is just starting his six year prison sentence in Brécourt. Although he has spent the better part of his life in juvenile detention, this stint is his first in an adult prison. Beyond the division of Corsicans and Muslims in the prison (the Corsicans who with their guard connections rule what happens in the prison), he has no known friends or enemies inside. He is just hoping to serve his time in peace and without incident, despite having no prospects once he's out of jail since he's illiterate and has no support outside of the prison. Due to logistics, the head of Corsican inmates, a sadistic mafioso named César Luciani, co-opts Malik as part of the Corsicans' activities, not only regarding what happens inside the prison, but also continued criminal activities outside. The innocent Malik has no idea what to do but cooperate. This move does not sit well with the other Corsicans, who only see Malik as a dirty Arab, and the Muslims who now mistrust him. But as time goes on, Malik works to save himself while in prison, while setting up his life post prison on his own terms. Both his demon and his salvation in prison is the specter of one of the first people he really got to know during his incarceration.

hell ya, i'll try to find this one.

idk if you seen it or not

what kinda genre you looking for in particular?

Uncle Steezo

"the man from earth" 2007
a man does not age. he's over 14,000 years old.

great flick.

babylon AD was aiight. typical vin diesel scifi action.

Dr. Simon Hurt
06-13-2010, 02:54 AM
^^^looks interesting, i'll look for it

babylon ad was ok, eh.

public enemies was ok except for the decision to shoot it on video, which robbed us of the typically great michael mann cinematography

i'm not looking for any genre in particular, although films with some visual idiosyncracies would be great, surreal plots, nonlinear narratives, whatever...the less mainstream, the better. if it's been in wide release, just assume i've seen it, or had the oppurtunity to and passed

06-13-2010, 03:50 AM

yeah most people have posted horrible films so far, apart from A Prophet which was probably the best flick i saw last year.

i don't know, see MOON if you haven't already.

06-14-2010, 02:35 PM
Brotherhood of the Wolf

This movie is SICK!!!!

^ This is not the real wolf. It was a model made for the hunters based on people's descriptions.

Yeah so this woman Monica Belluci is in this movie. She is so fine that it makes my balls tremble just seeing her in hi definitition.

The plot is wikid and the cinematography is so good it will make any kid want to be a director. At one point the Indian guy takes some peyote and becomes in tune with nature and tracks the wolf to its lair. That part is my favorite!!

I recommend Brotherhood Of The Wolf. Don't forget who told you so. Enjoy!

Brotherhood Of The Wolf is ill, favorite movie all time. Its a subtitled flik but that helps me get into the movie more. I dragged like 3 of my boys to the theatres to go see it and everyone liked it.
Back to the topic watch The Human Centipede shit is a trip I kept rubbin my knees after I watched it lol.

06-15-2010, 05:43 PM
if 45 minutes to an hour of slaughter is your thing, check out "rampage".
noone famous in it. its just about a regular american male who reaches his boiling point and goes on a mad killing spree on main street in a self made suit of bullet proof armor.

and get this, its directed by uwe bol. king of horrid movies. that in itself almost turned me away (and it should have). but i gotta say, he did a pretty good job on this. i think he just got pissed and said fuck it.
the subject matter for this movie guarantees no type of promotion for it. but its a damn brutal flick.

06-16-2010, 01:15 PM
^^^how was gary oldman in it?

Dr. Simon Hurt
06-21-2010, 09:44 PM
book of eli was fairly good...gary oldman is excellent as usual, i thought visually the movie was well done...the acting in general was of a pretty high standard, with denzel and oldman being the standouts, i thought mila kunis held her own as well.

i should have brotherhood of the wolf tomorrow.

10 Google Video Documentaries To Watch.
Here are some of my favorites. They are all very informative and entertaining. At least to me.

1. Dangerous Knowledge (http://bestdocumentaries.blogspot.com/2007/09/dangerous-knowledge-full-documentary.html)

In this one-off documentary, David Malone looks at four brilliant mathematicians - Georg Cantor, Ludwig Boltzmann, Kurt Gödel and Alan Turing - whose genius has profoundly affected us, but which tragically drove them insane and eventually led to them all committing suicide.

2. Dogfighting Undercover (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3175698126741936720&q=BBC+duration%3Along&total=333&start=0&num=10&so=1&type=search&plindex=8)

BBC-Dogfighting Undercover-August 30, 2007 Investigation into the secret and dangerous world of international dogfighting. For a year and a half, a BBC undercover team operated alongside dogfighting gangs in the UK and Europe, capturing on camera the savagery of organised fights. The film also reveals how American pitbull terriers - a banned breed created to be the ultimate canine gladiator - have been sold by the gangs into inner city Britain.

3. Secret Space (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1485155465058882626&q=illuminati+duration%3Along&total=333&start=0&num=10&so=1&type=search&plindex=0)

'A masterful documentary it cracks on at a tremendous pace. A subject that at first seems too ridiculous to contemplate leaves you nodding in agreement ... I always thought there was something suspicious about NASA's attitude to UFOs. Now I know why.' - Jason Cooney, K-Drive Radio, Los Angeles.

4. The History Of Freemasonry Of US (http://trueconspiracyblog.blogspot.com/2007/07/history-of-freemasonry-in-us.html)

Very interesting documentary about freemasonry in US from the very first days of independence. Produced by the History Channel.

5. The Iceman - Confessions Of A Mafia Hitman (http://crimeandcriminalsblog.blogspot.com/2007/08/iceman-confessions-of-mafia-hitman.html)

Up Close and Personal with a Killer. When I was finally admitted into the bowels of Trenton State Prison in New Jersey’s capital to interview multiple murderer Richard Kuklinski, a.k.a. “the Iceman,” it wasn’t at all what I had expected. My assumption was that it would be like the movies. We’d be separated by a shatter-proof glass barrier. We’d communicate through telephone handsets. There would be guards all around watching our every move. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Clarice Starling had more protection when she visited Dr. Hannibal “the Cannibal” Lector in The Silence of the Lambs. At least she had bars.

6. Zeitgeist The Movie (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5547481422995115331&q=documentary+duration%3Along&total=333&start=0&num=10&so=4&type=search&plindex=1)

Most of you know this one and seen it, but for those who might not.

7. The Half-Ton Man Documentary (http://bestdocumentaries.blogspot.com/2007/08/half-ton-man-documentary.html)

Patrick Deuel is the world's heaviest man - almost 1100 pounds. This documentary opens with paramedics removing a wall of his house in Valentine, Nebraska and transporting him six hours to a hospital where he spent months trying to lose weight to qualify for a gastric bypass operation.

8. Conspiracy Of Silence - Pedophile Ring In Washington DC

This was the biggest scandal in the history of the U.S.A history. The story received some newspaper coverage but there was a TV News Media blackout on the subject. For this reason, most Americans have never heard of it. Former republican Senator John Decamp was involved in the production a documentary called "Conspiracy of Silence" it was to air May 3, 1994 on the Discovery Channel. This documentary exposed a network of religious leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies. At the last minute before airing, unknown congressmen threatened the TV Cable industry with restrictive legislation if this documentary was aired. Almost immediately, the rights to the documentary were purchased by unknown persons who had ordered all copies destroyed. A copy of this videotape was furnished anonymously to former Nebraska state senator and attorney John De Camp who made it available to retired F.B.I. chief, Ted L. Gunderson.

9. Why We Bang Documentary (http://crimeandcriminalsblog.blogspot.com/2007/08/why-we-bang-full-documentary.html)

The film, "Why We Bang," produced and directed by Orlando Myrics and Clifford Jordan for Ghetto Logik Entertainment is an independent film that documents the historical background of LA's Bloods and Crips gangs, then transitions into several interviews of current and former members of the Bloods and Crips of Los Angeles.

10. Big Sugar (http://bestdocumentaries.blogspot.com/2007/08/big-sugar-documentary-parts-i-and-ii.html)

Big Sugar explores the dark history and modern power of the world's reigning sugar cartels. Using dramatic reenactments, it reveals how sugar was at the heart of slavery in the West Indies in the 18th century, while showing how present-day consumers are slaves to a sugar-based diet. Going undercover, Big Sugar witnesses the appalling working conditions on plantations in the Dominican Republic, where Haitian cane cutters live like slaves. Workers who live on Central Romano, a Fanjul-owned plantation, go hungry while working 12-hour days to earn $2 (US).

Documentary depicts what happened in Rio de Janeiro on June 12th 2000, when bus 174 was taken by an armed young man, threatening to shoot all the passengers. you're telling the movie couldn't have lost roughly an hour and been improved by it?

07-25-2010, 03:52 PM
^Then it wouldn't be a movie.

Dr. Simon Hurt
07-25-2010, 04:18 PM
^yes it would.there were a slew of unnecessary scenes in that movie that were uninteresting and contributed nothing to the story. dude, the movie was 2.5 hours. it could've lost an hour easily.

07-25-2010, 04:24 PM
What was the movie about? I'm asking because you seem to know, but are telling me you can lose a good portion of the central theme and it would still be a movie.

Dr. Simon Hurt
07-25-2010, 04:29 PM
you would not lose 'the central theme of the movie' by editing it down and making it less of a masturbatory exercise for judd apatow and an excuse to give his family speaking roles.

did you like the movie or are you just being argumentative as a way to consume time?

07-25-2010, 04:33 PM
I have my problems with it, but I actually think the humor is just fine, besides despite the title it is meant to be a drama. I'm not trying to argue with you, but it is clear by your answers that you have no clue what the movie is about, I mean it's a simple question any first year film student can answer. I could sum it up in 9 words. Can you?

Dr. Simon Hurt
07-25-2010, 04:39 PM
are you really trotting out the old 'you didn't like it, so you must not understand it' bit? for this movie?

i understood the concept fine. (and no i am not wasting any more time on this post explaining my interpretation of it, so if you won't to go 'so you didn't understand it then', have a ball. or two. orally.)

i can't just dislike the movie? the comedy didn't work for me, and neither did the contrived and poorly acted drama.

i saw your posts edging closer to the passive-agressive condescencion that characterizes your posting style, but i didn't believe you would actually do the whole 'you don't get it' thing.

i'm done. i didn't like the movie and thought it was awful and a waste of time. accept it. or not.

07-25-2010, 04:57 PM
Stop getting so defensive, god you're just like a ten year old. I'm simply asking you to give me your interpretation of what you thought the movie was about, something you haven't been able to do up to this point. I'm not saying you didn't get it, this is not an accusation. I'm simply asking you if you know what the movie was about and can elucidate on that. But if you wanna turn to babyish backtracking tactics because you feel embarrassed by a simple question, it just shows your level of maturity and intelligence. Way to give up in frustration too. I thought that was especially cute.

Lol,yeah def check out Ip Man, i'd give it a 8.5/10, the acting is excellent as well.

On a side note, I watched 36th Chamber of Shaolin a few days ago, long fucking overdue, considering its influence on the WTC and status as a martial arts classic. It was good but there was barely any action and the movie dragged.

Two more good Chinese films. "True Legend" and "Red Cliff"

True legend is a dope modern kung fu film. Not as good as Ip Man though, though i prefer it in some aspects as its set in an older age in China. Has Michelle Yeoh best known as the milf from Crouching Tiger.
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eDrkh8iya5A&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eDrkh8iya5A&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Red Cliff is a fucken epic Chinese war film set at 208-209 ADS . Not much martial arts just mass scale war. Theres the 2.5 hour international version. I watched the 4 hour version originally released in China. Trust, the stellar acting and fight scenes, does not make it boring. It was directed by John Woo and one of the main characters looks like an older Jet Li which was cool lmao. Another kung fu actor celebrity Tony Leung is part of the main cast as well.

"once were warriors"
was a good new zealand flick and
too although boy might be a movie that if you ain't from here you might not understand a lot of references and jokes from the 1980s

The amount of Jefferson Airplane in A Serious Man was the main reason i enjoyed it.

Adaptation- a spike jonze flick with nick cage and maryl streep.
without giving too much away, its a film that mirrors the plot within the plot.
after you see it you'll understand what i mean.

^ya i've seen it, it's brilliant. it plays some really clever games with storytelling in general. i'll fuck with anything written by charlie kaufman. good pick, though...that's more along the lines of recommendations that i'm looking for.

caught 'layer cake' last night...good, guy ritchie-esque caper flick starring daniel craig
