First there was Rep. Joe Barton, R-Tex., apologizing to BP for what he called a White House "shakedown."

Then there was White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, saying that Barton's comment -- since retracted -- reflects the Republican philosophy of favoring big business over everybody else.
Now comes Sarah Palin, who today sent the following Tweet (http://twitter.com/SarahPalinUSA): "RahmEmanuel= as shallow/narrowminded/political/irresponsible as they come,to falsely claim Barton's BP comment is 'GOP philosophy' Rahm,u lie."

The "u lie" part refers to the infamous comment that Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., made during a 2009 health care speech by President Obama.
Asked to respond to Palin, White House spokesman Bill Burton noted that some Republicans have defended Barton's comments about the $20 billion claims fund Obama negotiated with BP for victims of the Gulf Coast oil spill.
"We're satisfied that we're doing everything we can to take care of the folks in the Gulf region," Burton added, "and if she doesn't want to own Congressman Barton's comments, that doesn't surprise me."

Embattled BP CEO Tony Hayward canceled his appearance at a meeting of international oil tycoons Tuesday and his firm wouldn't say where he was.
The title of the speech Hayward was supposed to have given at the World National Oil (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/National+Oil+Corporation) Companies Congress in London (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/London+(England)): "Key roles and responsibilities of international oil companies in an age of uncertainty."
BP (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/BP+plc) spokesman Jon Pack (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Jon+Pack) said Hayward was too busy with his "very heavy schedule of commitments" to the slick-hit Gulf coast.
Pack declined to say where Hayward would be Tuesday or whether he was returning to the Gulf Coast.
There have been persistent reports that Hayward may be sidelined by his firm.
A gaffe machine who complained he wanted his life back and turned in an unsympathetic performance before Congress last week, Hayward was pilloried over the weekend for leaving oil-fouled Louisiana (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Louisiana) to go watch his yacht race on clean waves in England (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/United+Kingdom).
"If Tony Hayward (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Tony+Hayward) wants to put a skimmer on that yacht and bring it down to the Gulf, we'd be happy to have his help," cracked White House (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/The+White+House) spokesman Bill Burton (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Bill+Burton).
On Monday morning, Day 63 of the calamity, BP announced its spill costs had hit $2 billion.

A bonus dose of bullshit

Could the massive BP oil (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/BP+plc) spill been avoided if the company wasn't in
such a rush to put the well into production? One worker who was aboard
the Deepwater Horizon (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Deepwater+Horizon) claims the answer is yes.
Tyrone Benton (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Tyrone+Benton) told the BBC (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/British+Broadcasting+Corporation) he identified a leak in the rig's safety
equipment weeks before the blast. The leak, he said, was not fixed and
instead the faulty device was shut down, forcing the rig to rely on a
second one.
"We saw a leak on the pod, so by seeing the leak we informed the company
men," Benton told the BBC. "They have a control room where they could
turn off that pod and turn on the other one, so that they don't have to
stop production."
The pods control the blowout preventer, a valve that can seal off an oil
well and the most important piece of safety equipment on the rig. The
blowout preventer failed when the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April
20, which has resulted in approximately 100,000 barrels of oil gushing
into the Gulf every day.
The blowout preventer is equipped with large shears, which can seal off
the well's main pipe in the event of an emergency.
Benton said his supervisor alerted both BP and rig owners Transocean (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Transocean+Inc.)
about the leaks as soon as they were discovered.
Professor Tad Patzek (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Tad+Patzek), a petroleum expert at the University of Texas (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/University+of+Texas+System),
told the British news agency that the Benton's discovery should not have
been ignored.
"That is unacceptable. If you see any evidence of the blowout preventer
not functioning properly, you should fix it by whatever means possible."
Meanwhile, BP said its efforts to fix the catastrophe have cost a
staggering $2 billion to date.
