yo, everybody, check out that dude Nujabes. dont sleep on him.

he was a japanneese producer/dj, he died in the beginning of this year (crazy shit) in a car crash

anyway, most of his music is trip hop. he fuses jazz and hip hop ALOT and throws some dope underground mcs on his beats sometimes
his shit is like if u ever listened to "Easy Listening" music. but with a hip hop twist

Jun Seba (瀬葉淳 Seba Jun?), (February 7, 1974 February 26, 2010) was a Japanese hip-hop producer and DJ who recorded under the name Nujabes (new-jah-bes), the reverse spelling of his name in Japanese order. Nujabes was also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hydeout Productions.

In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.[1]

Nujabes was one of the most prolific contributors to the background music and soundtracks of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially in regard to hip hop culture.[2]

Another distinguishing feature of Nujabes' sound is Jun Seba's incorporation of Jazz samples in his tunes. Nujabes especially samples jazz in his song "The Final View" on his album Metaphorical Music. The Jazz Standard "Love Theme From Spartacus" by Pianist Bill Evans, as played by Saxophonist Yusef Lateef, is sampled over "The Final View." Nujabes incorporates Lateef's head melody on soprano, cuts of his solos, and background piano comping in his piece.

On February 26, 2010, Jun Seba was involved in a traffic accident upon exiting the Shuto Expressway late at night. He died at a hospital in Shibuya Ward after failed efforts to revive him. He was 36 years old. There was a private burial with only family in attendance. Hydeout Productions has stated that Nujabes has left behind tracks, which they plan to release in the near future.[3]

Damn, only one mention of Tricky and NO mention of Massive Attack in a trip hop thread?

Basically here are the essentials:

Massive Attack
-Blue Lines (1991), Protection (1994), Mezzanine (1998)

Blue Lines is more rooted in Soul II Soul style dance music, but its the one that got the ball rolling and still has tons of chill beats and dubby bass, soulful vocals and laid back raps.

Protection gets things a little darker and deeper. It has the trip hop hits "Karmacoma" and "Eurochild" both with Tricky and 3D rapping.

Mezzanine is a flat out masterpiece. So dark, groovy, deep, dubby, smoked out, tripped out etc. Great from start to finish. Perfect sexy and sinister urban/noir atmosphere. Might just be the best trip hop album ever made.

Portishead
- Dummy (1994), Portishead (1997)

Both of these are classic trip hop that really defined the whole jazzy cabaret/spy thriller/film noir sound that became the cliche in trip hop. Dummy is a bit lighter and sexier, but still torchy. s/t is very dark and moody, probably the darkest trip hop album ever made (though Nearly God, Pre-Millennium Tension, and Mezzanine come close).

Third (2008) kind of goes beyond trip hop into more experimental rock territory, but you should still dig it if you like the first two.

Tricky
- Maxinquaye (1995), Nearly God (1996), Pre-Millennium Tension (1996)

Tricky is probably the best for those who dig raw hip hop. At his most skeletal, he sounds like RZA doing post-punk. Maxinquaye was his most popular album and the one most consider to be his best. Lovely vocals by Martina Topley-Bird, creepy rasps by Tricky, but mostly lighter than the next two. (Cool Public Enemy cover/re-interpretation as well)

Neary God might be my favorite trip hop album ever. It's a very dark, claustrophobic, and nocturnal album - perfect for driving through the city at night while spliffed out. It's supposed to be a comp of collabos he did, but it feels like a unified album except for a one or two out of character "happy" songs like his collabo with Neneh Cherry. Great appearances by Bjork and Martina. Creepy beats. Cool covers of Siouxsie and the Banshees, "Black Coffee," Depeche Mode, and Slick Rick. Mezzanine might be the deepest and smoothest, Portishead the darkest, but Nearly God is certainly the trippiest trip hop album.

Pre-Millennium Tension is another album proper. It suffers from some undeveloped and overly minimal (and too long) tracks, but overall its another great piece of suffocating, dusty hip-hop productions that sound like they've been smoking kush laced with opium.

I've heard Angels with Dirty Faces (1998) is his last good album, but I haven't heard it so I can't comment

DJ Shadow
- Endtroducing... (1996), Preemptive Strike (1998)

You guys already seem to know enough about Endtroducing. Good shit, but I'll move on.

If you love Endtroducing, def get Preemptive Strike which is a comp of his previous singles including "In/Flux" (1993) the first song to ever get christened "trip hop" and the entire 4-part "What Does Your Soul Look Like?" series. It's basically what led up to Endtroducing and two singles that came after, so if you love that album, you'll dig this.

DJ Krush
-Strictly Turntablized (1994), Krush (1994), Meiso (1995)

I still don't have any full albums by him, but I'm aware these are the main essentials. You guys already seem to know enough about him. I'll add some reviews once I check them out the whole way through. Great producer obviously.

I would also consider Dr. Octagonecologyst to be something of a trip hop album for the production. Plus Keith's rapping style has more in common with the laid back, strange rhymes by Tricky (when he actually rapped) and 3D than any other hardcore hip hop album of the time.

I don't know if I would consider El-P's productions to be trip hop. They're certainly trippy and they're certainly hip-hop, but they just don't have the same sexy & soulful but dark & atmospheric sound.
