View Full Version : The Calm Before The Storm

In my second post today I discuss what we do when there's not much happening in hip hop

There seems to be a lull right now. Maybe I’m just sleeping but I feel like nothing has really dropped in the last few weeks, a few tracks here and there, a “Power” remix that was promised (http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.11932/title.kanye-west-to-release-power-remix-with-jay-z-tomorrow) and not delivered (as it was scheduled for Friday the 13th, a little too obvious (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt104/maximumrule/Illuminati/illuminati-jayz.jpg) I guess huh?) and aside from a mixtape here and there plus the rumblings of some pointless beef (http://realtalkny.uproxx.com/2010/08/topic/topic/music/rick-ross-summers-mine-young-jeezy-diss/) (Jeezy > Ross) not too much is happening right now in hip hop.

I’ve had to keep myself entertained through the various classy videos that WorldStar has to offer (including the masterpiece that is Gucci Mane’s “Makin’ Love To The Money” (http://worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video.php?v=wshhWHvlfvp05Dzwn7Li)) as well as going back over some classics and reliving those memories of when Ice Cube was dropping bombs in the form of knowledge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dNPsXwLlK8) as opposed to bad TV scripts (http://egyptsaidso.com/files/2010/06/AreWeThereYet.jpg). I’m sure some random album dropped that I’ll sleep on until I see it on someone’s Top 10 (http://www.reppghhiphop.com/artist-support/top-10/) list at the end of the year, but for now I’m starting to get sick of playing “Teflon Don” and “How I Got Over” back to back to back to back. Even “Loso’s Way” has been getting some serious spins lately because there’s really nothing else out there and because that Fabolous album is far and away one of the best albums of last year, and easily Fab’s best release of his career. I’m ready for some new shit, and in what was supposed to be the most epic summer of hip hop, the buzz has really worn off and it’s starting to get a little boring in rap. It’s pretty sad when the most exciting thing that’s happened recently is the announcement of a possible collaboration between Kanye West, Raekwon and Justin Bieber (http://www.reppghhiphop.com/2010/08/16/kanye-x-chef-x-bieber/).

But really doe, it’s kinda nice sometimes to be able to relax for a minute and not have hundreds of mp3s to download every day to see what useless throwaway verse Joell Ortiz is promoting off his never-to-be-released album or who’s bitch slapping who and why I should give a shit. Gives me some time to watch one of the thousands of movies I’ve (legally of course) procured from some website that’s hosted in a foreign country I’ve never heard of or clean out the DVR that’s filled with shit since January. We all got lives outside of hip hop and so being able to read the actual news instead of the Juelz Santana being arrested (http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.11928/title.juelz-santana-arrested-and-released) news is refreshing, as well as just getting away from everything hip hop and remembering that there’s a world that doesn’t just exist through 16 bar efforts.

Hip hop is in a calm period right now, and the storm we’re coming up on is the guaranteed-instant-classic album from Mr. West in which he managed to get Beyonce to very uncomfortably drop the n bomb and awkwardly refer to himself as his mama’s boyfriend. November is way too long to wait so I’m hoping Kanye breaks the record for album leakage and we get this shit mid-September, but until then I’ll stay bumping the likes of “Poverty’s Paradise”, “Lethal Injection”, and whatever other random artifacts I find while digging through my hard drive.
