    For soulful Jazz a good start would be:
    Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, Hubert Laws, Bob James, Idris Muhammed, Leon Thomas, Phil Upchurch, Ahmad Jamal, Roy Ayers, Wade Marcus, Billy Cobham, Jaco Pastorius, Eumir Deodato, Weather Report, Johnny Hammond, George Benson. Check out the record Labels CTI and Blue Note especially during the mid-70's.

    A quick and fun way to learn about a certain period of music to select from is listening to a radio show that specializes in it, if you can find one on FM radio or an internet stream check it out asap.

    I realize the internet can be confusing to learn about music if you don't have a way to consolidate the crazy wealth of information. If you have a gmail account try using Google Reader to subscribe to podcasts, blogs and other music sites. That'll give you a nice updated stream of music information on the daily.
