The sun is always shining.
One part of the Earth is dark while another is light.
According to Genesis 1 there was no sun when this light (probably twilight, an "aura"
, or electromagnetic field
) was called "day", the earth being older then the sun was influenced by this "light".
Darkness already existed (Genesis 1:2) and was later called Night.
