Default Any Blues Fans Up In This Motherfucker?

I've been listening to a fair bit of Eric Clapton/Cream/Derek and the Dominos lately, and really enjoying some of the more bluesy tracks, so I thought I might like to check out some of the blues artists who influenced these guys, especially Clapton's guitar style. I read Clapton's autobiography recently where he mentioned a lot of the blues artists who influenced him, but unfortunately the book was from the library so I don't have that motherfucker handy. I remember him mentioning dudes like B B King and Howlin' Wolf though.

Anybody here well versed in blues music? What do I need to hear?

Check out the documentary film Blues: The Godfathers and Sons. It's a great movie about history of blues and how it influenced the whole modern music of western civilization. It's narrated by Chuck-D.

Check out Robert Johnson. Legend tells it that he sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads for his talent. Check out Muddy Waters too.

RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough are my shit. there's a great documentary called "You See Me Laughin'." It's about a couple of young white guys that who started Fat Possum Records. They tracked down all the best old blues players from around Mississippi and got them to record their music which they had never done before. These guys went from basically playing in tiny bars for little or no money most of their lives to going on tour in their later years.

A couple of the guys in this documentary you'll recognize in the bar scene in Black Snake Moan.

    found it on youtube...

Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign
    Muddy Waters - Electric Mud
Howlin Wolf did an electric blues album that was really good
    Check John Lee Hooker too

With the above 4 artists you cant really go wrong with any of their late 50s/early 60s stuff even though it is all quality. I suggest exploring on allmusic to find more that are similar.

I was about to say you MUST check out Junior Kimbrough. He's easily my favorite, and a monster influence on Black Keys, who are a phenomenal blues band (though their newer material branches out into other genres). Junior is as dirty as it gets.

Noel I've got a few blues CDs I recommend you check out or just a resource to check out artists and go YouTube surfing

Essential East Coast Blues (Blind Boy Fuller, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Peg Leg Howell, Barbecue Bob, Blind Willie McTell, Bumble Bee Slim) heaps more but those are just the ones on the cover. 2 disc compilation would be a good start to find artists.

The Early Blues Roots of Led Zeppelin (17 Led Zeppelin "influences")

Blind Boy Fuller - Get Your Yas Yas Out (wasn't that a Rolling Stones record)

    Leadbelly - The Blues

Big Bill Broonzy - The Blues

Blind Willie McTell - Best Of

Mississippi John Hurt - Avalon Blues

    Robert Johnson - Complete Recordings

Blind Lemon Jefferson - Texas Blues (5 discs)

A different Kind of Blues <--- recommended 2 discs 42 tracks has Muddy Waters, Albert King, Howlin Wolf, Little Richard, The James Gang, Taj Mahal, Funkadelic, RL Burnside...heaps of good shit a bit later than the other stuff above

Some of these guys are from the 1920's and earlier I think. The recordings have been improved but they're still pretty rough. It's really surreal to listen to music from nearly 100 years ago.

Boogie - Australian Blues, R&B and Heavy Rock from the 70's (why not lol some good stuff on here)

I've got best ofs for Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker, the three Kings & Muddy Waters too. All great stuff can't go wrong.

Don't you live in Sydney too? There is (or was I honestly don't know if it's still there) a blues bar in Enmore just past the Enmore theatre. More of a chilled place with a DJ but sometimes they get blues acts in. A pretty well known blues artist in their 80's came out for blues fest a few years back and played there but I forget who.

Thanks for the tips, dude. I already know quite a few of those guys, but plenty to check out.

Nah I'm not in Sydney. I grew up near parramatta but moved up the coast 7 years ago. Saw a few shows at the enmore, including rza.

R u into Son House at all. He's been my favorite blues discovery thus far.
