Thread: What was the Egyptian Aten?

Default What was the Egyptian Aten?

What was the Egyptian, Aten or Aton?

Was it a god, a physical contraption, an illusion, What?

Most historians say it was a Sun god, but Egypt already had a well established Sun God name, “Ra”. What need would there be for another ? Other historians say Aten was an aspect of Ra .

If the Aten was an actual physical contraption then it was a physical contraption which always appears to defy gravity. If it were a an Illusion it was a powerful one, for it cost many lives and literally tore Egypt apart.

Everything about The Aten is still shrouded in mystery. Not the least of which was Aten’s greatest advocate, Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, The strangest looking and most religiously fanatical of all Egyptian pharaohs.

So obsessed was this pharaoh with Aten that he changed his name from, Amenhotep IV to Akhenaton "Effective spirit of the Aten.". He moved himself and Aten from Thebes the traditional religious capital of Egypt to a new land (250 miles) north of Luxor on the east bank of the Nile known as Amarna.

Some say Akhenaton was the very first monotheists. Worship of Aten was a monotheistic religion, intolerant of any other religion. Akhenaton tried to force Aten worship throughout all of Egypt.

Historians still are not in agreement of where Akhenaten came from and what exactly happened to him.

Because of his monotheistic religion, some scalars have associated him with the biblical Moses. Sigmund Freud in his book “Moses and Monotheism” Freud say’s, at the very least, Moses was a member of Akhenaten court. Ahmen Osman in his book, “Moses and Akhenaten” even goes so far as to say Moses was Akhenaten. William Brambley of, “The Gods of Eden” , tells us, it was Akhenaten who first instituted the so call Egyptian brotherhood which separated the average Egyptian from immortality and kept it for a select few.

Back to the Aten_____ where Akhenaton’s contraption was the Aten, the contraption associated with Moses was the Ark of the Covenant, an equally powerful, strange, and little understood piece of equipment. That killed people.

The Aten and the Arc of the Covenant IMHO share some sort of relationship. I am not quite sure what that relationship is. I know they are not the same thing but……There are a lot of coincidences and things to ponder here. Sigmund Freud points out the biblical Chapter Psalms and the Egyptian Hymn to Aten are almost exactly the same. Moses was an Egyptian name meaning “child of “ , as in Ra-Moses, Ah- Moses, Troth-Moses .

Both Akenaten and Moses are said to have introduced Monotheism to their peoples. The Ark of the Covnent was said to house God. The Orb or disk called Aten was said to be the house where Aten resided. The Aten was a device appearing to defy gravity. The Ark of the Covenant was apparently a gravity device also. Where weight was increase on the shoulders of the Arks human carriers until the were forced to set the Ark down.

Many have said the Ark was an electronic device which stored energy like an electronic compacitor. On top of the Ark was two Cherubs facing each other. And the gap between the two cherubs (positive and negative terminals?) was apparently was were all the action went on. This was where the bible tells us this was the Mercy seat from which God spoke.

The Tabernacle where the ARC was kept had curtains keeping the Arc from direct view. Once in the presence of The Arc one was required among other things to burn incense (smoke) so as to not being able to clearly see what one was looking at. Perhaps mirrors were used also (smoke and mirrors).

What ever was done in that room IMO was done in such a way as to make the person in that room through treachery and deception (smoke and mirrors if you will) be thoroughly convinced he was in the presence of god himself and be so awe stricken that the person would blindly obey what lay between the two (positive and negative) cherubs, the Mercy seat, the “speaker Stone” or whatever else you wish to call it.

And I humbly submit to you the reader that what lay between the two cherub, what was the Mercy Seat, Speaker Stone or by any other name, was none other than the Orb or Disk…. The thing the Egyptians called, ……….the ATEN.

    Peace and Blessings Fatal...

...Aten was a name used for the physical sun, so to say "what is the need for another sun god name when there was Ra" is not entirely accurate. Ra was a "sun god" as has been called by egyptologists but only in so much as the Sun was the largest and most powerful visible representation of the Life Force/Ra (or Holy Spirit) and was therefore associated with Ra so often. Ra though is so much more than just the sun and so to call the sun "an aspect of Ra" would be correct.

So far I haven't read anything that would convince me that Akhenaton was anything more than a manipulative, self obsessed traitor who set up the religion of the Aten as a political scheme and in the end was one of the main reasons for the downfall of Kamit.

It an interesting thread though Fatal and I wouldn't put it past Akhenaton to have some sort of device in his possession that was,
to make the person in that room through treachery and deception (smoke and mirrors if you will) be thoroughly convinced he was in the presence of god himself and be so awe stricken that the person would blindly obey what lay between the two (positive and negative) cherubs, the Mercy seat, the “speaker Stone” or whatever else you wish to call it

Blessings to all of you for sharing your opinions on this subject.

Fatal: could you point me in the direction of some resources where I do further research on some of the matters you touched on?

...any ideas, Fatal, what exactly the Aten would have been? When you say it was the "orb or disc" what does that mean exactly?
