The only thing pop about them was the simplistic choruses I think. The verses themselves were classic hard spitting Nas.

It was written is a unique album like that, it has credibility but it also has crossover appeal. In general its a hard fucking album and the singles managed to sell and still fit into the albums style.

But Nas is coming is wack for a million different reasons.

You think? A lot of Illmatic's choruses had pop appeal too though. (The World Is Yours, Life's A Bitch, One Love) The biggest stretch on IWW was If I Ruled the World and that's only because he took the route of getting Lauryn on the chorus to get crossover appeal.

There is nothing wrong with If I Ruled The World, that's a great track. It's gay choruses like Street Dreams that fucked up IWW.

No don't get me wrong, IIRTW is a great tune, and I agree w/ you, Street Dreams chorus is grating, but I don't think it ruins the song, let alone the album

More than just Street Dreams, that was just an example. Foxy Brown on Watch Dem Niggas is also annoying. She makes up for it with Affirmative Action though.

The choruses several times in IWW are overly simplistic but only two of them are grating imo (Nas Is Coming, Street Dreams). Watch Dem Niggas isn't a bad chorus, maybe a boring one but not bad. And her verse in AA was written by Nas right? Her delivery was good though even if she didn't write it.
