Default Public outrage after U.S. golf course sells nine holes for $9.11 to ‘commemorate’ 9-1

A Wisconsin golf course is pulling a mulligan after its plan to host a Sept. 11 sale to “commemorate” the lives of the more than 3,000 civilians who perished during the 9-11 attacks went awry.

The deal? Nine holes of golf (with a cart, mind you) for $9.11 for one day only — Sept. 11.

The course even posted an ad in the Wisconsin State Journal newspaper.
Predictably, news of Tumbledown Trails Golf Course’s promotion made the rounds on Twitter this week, causing a big enough stir that the course was considering closing due to safety concerns.

“We’re a little hurt by the fact that people are putting such a negative context on this,” said course owner and general manager Marc Watts. “I thought people would appreciate it.”

Evidently, turning one of the worst days in U.S. history into a Black Friday of sorts wasn’t well received, despite the fact the course started the promotion in 2010.

Local authorities posted an officer at the course on Tuesday after Watts reportedly received death threats.

A message to customers was also posted to Tumbledown’s Facebook account in the wake of the kerfuffle.

“We will still let all that have tee times booked play for the previous rate we posted. Then, for all other golf that day we would like to donate the $ difference between our normal rate and the previous price for the day to the 9-11 Memorial.

“We hope that everyone will now see this as a positive as we really meant it to be.”
