Red face A Miami Woman leads double life: Good in Miami, Bad in Detroit

In Miami, she was a community hero. In Detroit, she was a part of a criminal organization that preyed on the impoverished. In Miami, Binimelis was an individual who had a caring heart for her community; people described her as an effective leader in the church; she was very generous with her wealth, time, and talents.

However, in Detroit, Binimelis lived on the dark side. Binimelis was a part of a criminal organization that ripped off tax payers for more than $1 million. Federal investigators want to lock Binimelis up for the criminal activity that she conducted and wants her to pay restitution for the money she stole from taxpayers.

In Miami, The Minority Chamber of Commerce stated that Binimelis was an excellent giver. The Pastor of her church describes Binimelis as a loving person who will do everything for everyone in need of help. She is well known in Miami for being a community leader and an inspiration to the citizens. In Detroit, she was a monster who cared little about the impoverished and saw them as a way to get rich.

This is how the scam was conducted: The crime organization that Binimelis was a part of in Detroit would seek out impoverished individuals either in homeless shelters and/or soup kitchens; offer the people cash and/or drugs for the exchange for their Medicare and Medicaid information. Once in possession, they use the Medicare and Medicaid information to bill for very expensive produces in order to make large sums of money.

Binimelis pleaded guilty to all charges. She is sentenced to 20 months in prison for her crimes in Detroit and she will pay restitution of $1,273,000. In Miami, because of her great deeds, there was a reduction in her sentence.

Discuss. This is a piece I wrote a few days ago. It makes me sick how certain people take advantage of the less fortunate.
