Default R.I.P. James Avery aka Uncle Phil

James Avery -- the beloved dad on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" -- has died at age 68 ... TMZ has learned.

Sources close to the actor tell TMZ he died in an Glendale, CA hospital last night. Avery had undergone open heart surgery and took a turn for the worse late yesterday.

And we're told ... his wife, Barbara, had been at his bedside but left for a short period of time and when she came back ... she learned he had just died.

Alfonso Ribeiro -- who played Avery's son on "Fresh Prince" -- just posted a message on his Facebook page.

RIP James. He was a good actor. He also played on Sparks tv show with Robin Givens, Terrence Howard, Miguel Nunez. His character was in charge of a law firm in Los Angeles and Robin, Terrence, Miguel were lawyers that worked for him.

There go the chances of there ever having a reunion show or movie
(which should've been done years ago imo)

I heard talks that if there ever was a reunion show or movie, alot of people
would consider Reginal Veljohnson (Carl Winslow) to take the role of Uncle Phil !?!

sure they replaced actresses for the aunt viv role but i feel it wont be the same with Uncle Phil.

on a side note - there was a recent pic of the 1st aunt viv, shes into bodybuilding or something because she was cut/ripped cant find the pic anywhere tho.

    none the less

RIP James Avery aka Uncle Phil

They can't do that, because it won't be the same, and people will watch it with negative reviews before the reunion even airs.

    Yea I totally agree

Reginald is known for the character Carl Winslow.
Having him on Fresh Prince as Uncle Phil would be really odd.

    Uncle Phil Hologram maybe?

I doubt Will Smith would do a reunion movie. It's too busy making other crappy movies.
