Whenever you are self-conscious you are simply showing that you are not conscious of the self at all. You don’t know who you are. If you had known, then there would have been no problem— then you are not seeking opinions. Then you are not worried what others say about you— it is irrelevant!

When you are self-conscious you are in trouble. When you are self-conscious you are really showing symptoms that you don’t know who you are. Your very self-consciousness indicates that you have not come home yet.”

The Five Ranks of the Apparent and the Real
The Five Ranks Of The Apparent And The Real:
The Orally Transmitted Secret Teachings Of The Monk Who Lived On Mount To

Tozan Ryokai's Verses On The Five Ranks:

    1)The Apparent Within The Real:
In the third watch of the night
    Before the moon appears,
    No wonder when we meet
    There is no recognition!
    Still cherished in my heart
Is the beauty of earlier days.

    2)The Real Within The Apparent:
    A sleepy eyed grandam
Encounters herself in an old mirror.
    Clearly she sees a face
But it doesn't resemble hers at all.
Too bad, with a muddled head,
She tries to recognize her reflection!

3)The Coming From Within The Real:
Within nothingness there is a path
Leading away from the dusts of the world.
Even if you observe the taboo
    On the present emporer's name,
You will surpass that eloquent one of yore
    Who silenced every tongue.

    4)The Arrival At Mutual Integration:
    When two blades cross points,
There is no need to withdraw.
    The master swordsman
Is like a lotus blooming in the fire.
Such a man has in and of himself
    A heaven soaring spirit.

    5)Unity Attained:
    Who dares to equal him
Who falls into neither being nor non-being!
    All men want to leave
    The current of ordinary life,
But he, after all, comes back
To sit among the coals and ashes.

    The Master's verse comment says:
How many times has Tokuun, the idle old gimlet,
Not come down from the Marvelous Peak!
He hires foolish wise men to bring snow,
And he and they together fill up the well.

"When the eight consciousnesses are inverted, the Four Wisdoms are bound together, the Three Bodies are perfected?" Therefore:

    Your own nature is provided
    With the Three Bodies;
    When its brightness is manifested,
    The Four wisdoms are attained

Timing In Martial Arts pg 33- book of 5 rings

in all things there is an element of timing, but timing in martial arts in particular is difficult to master without practice. timing is demonstrated in the world in such things as dance in the way of noh and in the music of gagaku. this timing is good when they are in rhythm. in the way of martial arts , there is timing and harmony in the shooting of a bow, the firing of a gun, and even riding a horse. in various arts and skills of the warrior, timing cannot be overlooked. there is even timing in emptiness. there is timing in the life of a warrior, too, in rising in the world and in declining, in the harmony and discord. similarly, there is timing in the way of the merchant, in amassing fortune and losing it. in all paths of life there is rising and falling in timing. the timing of flourishing and the timing of declining must be keenly distinguished. timing in martial arts is various. first know right timing and understand wrong timing and discern appropriate timing from among the large and small and between slow and fast timing. knowing the timing of things spatial and the timing of the reversal of things is the specialty of martial arts. martial arts cannot be certain without knowledge of the timing of the reversal of things.

How must the god of righteous begin? the first way to bring about something new is to change the way of thinking of the people. when you have removed from the people. the old mind and idea then you can insert new ideas into their minds. this is done by the old being attracted by a new way of teaching....a new school of learning to condition their minds to that thing that you are about to perfect to them that is altogether new and different from what they have been accustomed to
