    Default text vs voice

    Peace

a good recorded verse does not always translate well into text

even a hype verse can come off as dry or corny with the lack of emphasis and volume shifts

what are the main differences for yall here?

whats the difference between a verse that looks good
and a verse that sounds good

i have some thoughts on this, but i cant really pinpoint them yet

i am trying to compile a article on this, so if anybody gives feedback on this, i would appreciate permission to use your thoughts on this (with full credit of course)

i will be looking thru the threads here for the type of feedback that rhymes get to try and determine what the trends are

    any assistance would be appreciated

Cadence plays a big role in it. I can't put my finger on it either but if your cadence is good and you can hit the beat with your voice, it helps a lot.

so whats the trick with text?

is it more important for text verse to have structure then? if a person doesnt actually get to spit it and make those adjustments on the fly?

anybody could sit down and write a text verse, but what about breath control and emphasis?, I know I can flow to any beat on any verse I write, but alot of these dudes out here haven't shown and proved that, so I can't really speak on them, but as for me, text needs to be structured, you can tell if somebody's flowin choppy with it or off-bar, so yeah, that answers that, structure is most def needed, but flowin' is a whole different field!

i remember showing dope verses to people and they be like 'yeah so...'

a couple from GZA and Cap come to mind

then you play the audio and it snaps their neck

    especially Cappa
some of his verses in written form look like maybe it was a special-ed student

then you hear the joint and youre ready to name your first born kid Cappadonna

Voice is rap; text is poetry.

The translation from the page to the mic is Hip-Hop.

    Peace.

With text all you have is words and the visual presentation of them, so if you don’t know how to use them it’s not gonna be impressive. For me a strong written basically comes down to word choice, structure, and content. You can throw in your fancy rhyme schemes and wordplay and whatever, but I personally don’t find that very impressive, especially without an oral presentation to back it up.

With audio you’ve got voice, delivery, flow, and the ability to use a beat in accordance with your words, as well as added effects in the mastering phase. So you can write a fairly poor grammatical piece, choose a beat which emphasises and fits the vibe of your written, arrange your verse around the beat, come with a delivery that also fits the verse and beat, and then if you know how to flow chances are you’re gonna have a verse that sounds tight, in spite of the lackluster written. Even if you haven’t got the delivery and arrangement side of it down, a few good editing techniques can make you sound good. El-P demonstrated this beautifully with Vast Aire on “Cold Vein”.

Personally I don’t consider many signed artists to be particularly good lyricists, but a lot of them are still tight mc’s.

Another thing on the relationship between text and writtens. When I started writing I had messy and uneven structure, and when I first started recording I couldn’t stay on beat for shit. Then I started writing to beats and pretty soon got the hang of staying inside certain guidelines to make text fit a beat. Once you get the hang of it, when you write you can tell exactly how each line will be delivered to fit an even flow. I see quite a few verses on here that I can’t imagine would fit a beat.

with text it's better to translate things, say the persons reading it at their own pace, and he/she can go back and read any part again and voice you can use aggresiveness n' shit and emotion which you might not be able to do in text. oh and beats too
