Difficult question for me to answer.

I don't really buy/watch films based on who directs usually, i just happen to accrue a collection of a certain director because they're films all appeal to me individually.

That being said, there are a couple of exceptions, so i guess i'd have to pick out of those:

    Martin Scorsese
    David Lynch
    Park Chan Wook/Chanwook Park
    Takeshi Kitano

    ....

And i think, i'll pick Lynch, because i have all his films, and i enjoy them all immensely.

The others, i either haven't quite seen all their films or i don't rate all of them extremely highly.

    Honorable mentions:

    Spike Jonze
    Michel Gondry
    Quentin Tarantino
    Steven Soderberg

(as an aside, Charlie Kaufman would be my favourite writer, as anything he's done i find great plus his directorial debut Synecdoche New York was brilliant)

^^^if he had more films to his name he'd definitely be in my main list...i suppose his should be there for 'pi' and 'requiem for a dream' alone...actually fuck it, he shouldn't even be in the honorable mention category actually...christopher nolan should get a mention as well.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Frank Darabont. I know a lot of people didn't like the Mist, but I thought it was brilliant, and Shawshank Redemption is one of the greatest American movies ever made.

^^^i love everything he's done...something about his overall aesthetic fits my mentality like a glove...even barry lyndon, which is probably the weakest of the work that he wasn't just commissioned to do, is beautifully shot

oh ya...terrence malick (badlands, the new world) and nicholas roeg (walkabout, the man who fell to earth, altered states) are both great as well

i don't know...i enjoyed shawshank and the mist...but since he's not really that visually stylish you could say he's a quality director of actors...but maybe he's just had the good fortune to work with great performers? i would need to see more stuff by him...but shawshank is definitely a keeper.

did you know he wrote the 80s remake of the blob? lol
