Default Arena Football League/Indoor

---The Arena Football League has shut down, this time indefinitely.

The league, which previously called off play for the 2009 season but had said it planned to return in 2010, sent a terse, one-paragraph statement to its teams late Tuesday announcing it had suspended operations.

The statement said the AFL's board had been "unable to reach any consensus on restructuring the league over the past eight months."

The 22-year-old indoor league had lost its commissioner and two teams since the end of last season. It reached a new agreement with its players this year, but that wasn't sufficient to persuade enough AFL owners that the league could return to profitability.

The AFL's board said "there are no other viable options available to the league right now."

The league is likely to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

"I've always thought the game was an attractive game, but we all know when you get the kind of pressure we're in, in these economic times, and then you have an economic model that really doesn't work, then it's not surprising to see it stop play," said Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who also owned the AFL's Dallas Desperadoes.

Jones, Super Bowl winner John Elway and rock star Jon Bon Jovi were among the marquee names with a financial stake in AFL teams.

Former NFL MVP Kurt Warner threw touchdown passes on the AFL's 50-yard fields before throwing them in Super Bowls. And the high-scoring games helped the league find a niche in small markets like Grand Rapids, Mich., to major ones like Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Soul, co-owned by Bon Jovi, were the last ArenaBowl champions in 2008. Craig Spencer, another Soul co-owner, said on Wednesday the team stands by the league statement.

David Baker abruptly resigned as league commissioner two days before the 2008 ArenaBowl championship game. Owners did not look for a replacement.

ESPN, which owns a small equity share in the league, said it is not involved in management of the AFL. The network said Tuesday its broadcast agreement with the league had been terminated.

Some AFL owners remain optimistic that the league can return in some form in 2010, perhaps in conjunction with the af2 league, an AFL offshoot that remains in business.

"We're hopeful things will work out here in San Jose," SaberCats vice president Hank Stern said.

The league still faces numerous legal issues. The owners could file for bankruptcy, but most players and coaches who were not paid salaries or roster bonus money in 2009 are looking to recoup that cash, according to Richard Berthelsen of the NFL Players Association.

Berthelsen assisted the AFL players union the past season and said there are several unresolved issues.

"I don't want anybody to think that because the league has made the announcement that they did, the players are just going to go away," he said by phone Wednesday

AFL owners could not agree on long-term structural improvements that would keep the league profitable.

A disagreement among owners about whether to bring in a private equity firm to invest in the league became a major sticking point in December.

"As with any league that is underfinanced and is competing for television time, there are differing views on how to make that succeed," Berthelsen said. "The players did everything they needed to, and then some, so that the league could survive. They were saying if player costs is the difference between surviving and not surviving, let's see if we can do something that would allow the league to survive."

Soul coach Bret Munsey accepted a buyout from the organization and took a job with the upstart United Football League. Munsey said he met with Bon Jovi in January, and the rocker told him he was confident the league would find a way to improve financially and find stability for the long haul.

For whatever reasons, there were no easy solutions.

Munsey wears his ArenaBowl championship ring as a reminder of just how fun the AFL was for him.

"I'm very proud of that," he said. "It's something that doesn't happen too often."

And it doesn't look like the Soul will get a chance to defend that title.

So there's an Arena Football League Part 2 that is still running? lol Are any of their games on tv? Also, the UFL will be starting this fall, and the USFL is coming back next year?

--Kurt Warner's new life begins Friday night

If you've got some time Friday night at around 8 p.m. ET, and a way to watch the NFL Network, you might want to tune into an Arena Football League game between the Arizona Rattlers and the Iowa Barnstormers. If his interviews during his playing time are an indication, you might see the start of a pretty good broadcasting career. Kurt Warner(notes), the future Hall-of-Famer and former Barnstormer quarterback, will be doing color for the broadcast alongside former Iowa quarterback Paul Burmeister. Warner, of course, had to make a detour through the AFL and NFL Europe after washing out as an undrafted free agent before finding his way back to the NFL and eventual stardom.

"I'm honored to be the first player inducted into the Barnstormers Hall of Fame and am looking forward to being a guest analyst for the game," Warner told the league's official site. "Having experienced success in both the AFL and NFL, I know that I'll be able to add a great deal of insight as a member of the broadcasting team for this game."

Just as he did as a player — he led the Barnstormers to the Arena Bowl in 1996 and 1997 — Warner hopes to use his time with the indoor league as a stepping stone to the big time. He recently told Michael Hiestand of USA Today that he has "talked with all the networks" [about an on-air job] and "now it's just wait and see. Talking about the game is something I've always enjoyed. ... It's going to be about finding the right situation without giving away my life again."

If you ask me, the NFL could do a lot worse than Warner ... and it frequently does. Just ask anyone forced to endure a game with Matt Millen blathering nonsensically at a breakneck pace (once again, dude ... not every NFL coverage is "Two-deep, man under." Seriously. It's not possible), and you'll wonder exactly what qualifications are mandatory for a broadcasting gig. Warner is fiercely intelligent, he's got a great life story, he's read more defenses than 95 percent of the quarterbacks he'd be analyzing, and he's certainly proven that he won't take "no" for an answer if he doesn't get what he wants at first call. I'm not a big AFL follower per se, but I'll be tuning in Friday night to see if Kurt Warner is as impressive in his new prospective profession as I expect him to be.

--Entire Arena Football team cut during pregame meal at Olive Garden

The owner of the Pittsburgh Power fired all 24 members of his team during a pregame meal at an Orlando-area Olive Garden.

With AFL players set to strike before the 2012 season opener, owner Matt Shaner reacted first, cutting his entire team hours before kickoff of a game against the Orlando Predators.

"Mid-statement, all the players got up and left," former Power center Beau Elliott told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Every player got up and left while he was still talking. There were 15 to 20 angry, large individuals."

The AFL Player's Association was calling for an increase in the $400 game checks paid to most players on each team. The union demanded a 300 percent increase in the minimum salary. AFL owners countered with a $100 raise.

Shaner told the newspaper that some players split from the union and returned to the team in time for Saturday night's game. Those who didn't were stuck in Orlando and forced to return to Pittsburgh on their own.

Members of the Predators were also released.

The game was still played, with unfilled roster spots being taken by replacement players, some of whom arrived to the arena minutes before kickoff. One backup quarterback switched teams before the game after getting "drafted" during a pregame selection. As a result, the season opener had the feeling of a pick-up game down by the local high school field.

The NFL Network broadcast the game live. Announcers reportedly couldn't identify a number of players.

Pittsburgh won 40-26, in front of more than 13,000 fans.

Other AFL teams played the same day with complete rosters.

-Terrell Owens released by Allen indoor team

ALLEN, Texas (AP) Terrell Owens has been released by the Allen Wranglers and lost his ownership stake in the Indoor Football League team.

The team says Owens didn't plan to play in two upcoming road games with possible playoff implications. The six-time Pro Bowl receiver also was a no-show for a scheduled appearance at a local children's hospital with other players and coaches.

Wranglers owner Jon Frankel said in a statement Tuesday that the team couldn't keep a player like Owens when fans were noticing and commenting about a ''lack of effort both on and off the field.''

The 38-year-old Owens didn't get any NFL offers to play last season after surgery on his left knee. He had 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns while playing eight of Allen's 11 games.

For the 2013 season, the league's new national broadcast partner will be the CBS Sports Network. CBSSN will air nineteen regular season games and two playoff games. CBS will air the ArenaBowl, marking the first time since 2008 that the league's finale airs on network television.
