The lyrics Erick and Parrish said on this song about the rap industry is very true and the same stuff is happening today that they were talking about. A lot of rappers trying to crossover and do radio friendly songs thinking that they're gonna sell a lot of records and make a lot of money when in reality, the record company is gonna take the majority of their money. Most rappers are scared to stick to the underground hardcore music because they wanna be famous and sell records instead of doing real hip hop like EPMD.

but has anyone noticed that back in the golden age, when EVERYONE was dope it appeared, rappers were constantly talking about how rappers 'these days' were wack and commericial?

I see it this way, TSA: up until '92 everyone was talking about that general abstract "sucka MC" who embodies everything is wack within rap. But he was abstract, you couldn't point the finger on nobody (with exceptions of those who were getting universally ridiculed, as Hammer or Vanilla Ice, but nobody took them seriously anyway).

Then, suddenly, in '92 another type of tracks appeared: the tracks in which you actually felt some kind of panic that the whole culture is starting to slip down ("Fakin' the Funk", "Crossover", "Come Clean"...). It's hard to picture for us from this perspective, but if you listen to how the rap sound was changing you can hear that it was the year when gangsta rap first started to become dominant, not just one of the niches. Yes, it sounds dope from our perspective (we've heard so much shit rap that what once was wack sounds dope to us), but I can see that a lot of political and conscious rappers from that period saw it as proof that the empire is starting to crumble.

And as for "watered down MC's", by the time Wu said that there was indeed a big portion of rappers who actually were watered down and just xeroxing thug talk that was selling at the moment.

Claaa7 who are those rappers besides Boss Money Players? I never heard of them. I would listen to more underground rappers but these rappers be pissing me off with their wack beats. Good rappers are terrible at picking good beats and that's why so many good rappers albums suck. Parrish Smith made some good points on Crossover about the rap industry when he said some say there's no business like show business but if this is the truth, please explain why is this. Rap has been around long making mad noise ya see. Still i haven't seen one rapper living comfortably.
