Default Beatles Catalog Lands on iTunes; Years of Legal Wrangling Ends

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on November 16, 2010 - 8:11am.

Cupertino, Calif.
- Following years of legal wrangling and often-contentious negotiations, Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Tuesday began selling the Beatles' catalog through its iTunes Store. Single albums are available for purchase and download for $12.99 each, double albums for $19.99 each and individual songs for $1.29 each.

Through agreements with Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI, the service is now selling 13 of the legendary band's remastered studio albums, as well as the two-volume "Past Masters" compilation and classic "Red" and "Blue" collections.

In addition to the albums, iTunes also will sell a special digital "Beatles Box Set" ($149) featuring all of the studio recordings, plus the "Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964" concert film, which captures the Beatles' first U.S. concert.

"It has been a long and winding road to get here," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we've had since we launched iTunes 10 years ago."

well you've got millions of computah illiterate people who actually grew up in that era and have no idea how to get the entire discography by torrent, so millions will be made off this offering since itunes is a no-brainer to some.

Still.... $149 for a digital box set? That's insane. The term box set doesn't really translate very well as bits and bytes.
