IQ vs Hard work

The secret to the high performance of Asian students in school
is hard work and perseverance. And underlying this is a
philosophy: the philosophy that you can do anything you want,
achieve anything you want, through hard work. It is an
underlying belief in hard work as being the key to achievement
and success. And this underlying philosophy gives a person the
courage, morale and strength needed in life to accomplish
things.

Standing in direct contrast to this belief in the
power of hard work and perseverance is the American philosophy:
the philosophy of "intelligence" or IQ --- the philosophy that
some have it and some don't, that you can only accomplish as
much as your intelligence allows. Thus while the emphasis
among Asians is that a person can do anything he wants, the
emphasis among Americans is on the limitation imposed upon you
by your intelligence. With the IQ concept there are gradations
of intelligence --- the genius, the quick learner, the normal
learner, the slow learner, the mentally retarded, the idiot,
the moron, etc. --- and how well one can do is limited by his
level of intelligence.

Under the American philosophy you just
find out what your IQ is and accept it. There is nothing you
can do about it and there is no use in fighting it. If the IQ
test says you are a moron that is just it. There is no point
in working hard. Perseverance will do nothing for you. You
might as well just enjoy life the best you can and make the
best of the situation.

For a teacher to expect a student to
perform above the level of his intelligence would be cruel. We
can only expect a person to do what he is able to do. The
final effect of this philosophy is to weaken, to destroy
morale, to discourage, to cause people to question their
ability to do things. And it has another effect: it causes
lack of confidence and creates inferiority complexes. No one
in the American educational system ever talks about the
importance of perseverance or the power of hard work. They
can't. They believe in IQ. That is what everyone has been
taught.

And so that is why the Asian students are outdoing American
students by so much all over the country, why Japanese students do so much better than American students on standardized tests, etc.. The
Asians have not been so gullible as to buy the IQ concept ---
they have better sense.

some people have limited intelligence and are only cut out for service jobs or or possibly volunteer work like internet moderation.

I don't care how hard you work at something, it's not going to substitute for natural born talent that some occupations require.

The "Philosophy of Asian students" is destruction of self. They're totally deprived of western notions of humanity and they are shells of human beings. They might be far advanced academically but they can't interact with regular people for shit. They're human calculators. If I had to pick between a straight A Harvard grad and a straight A state schooler I'd pick the latter because the fact of the matter is there's more to life than doing well. That Harvard grad has worked his ass off his whole life and he's going to feel entitled. A kid who did straight A's at a state school worked hard but probably has a life and personality. He's not going to have the entitlement of "I'm the best there is." He's going to have the attitude "I'll do my best." Besides there's only a handful of jobs to fill where the Boss wants someone far smarter than them.

Doing well is more about finesse than hard work. In business I'd rather have a guy who can pull off miracles than someone who works hard. IQ differentiates people who have a lot of ability from people who don't. I was like a 130 IQ at 16. I know I don't work hard but I can fuck shit up. I can do a 10 page essay without research the night before it's due. That's being clutch. Anyone douche can write a page a night for 10 nights. I can get drunk and high for a week before I look at the assignment. It means when i have to I can do ten pages every night. Assuming they're paying me right.

It really goes both ways, hard work and dedication can and will get you a long way but a three year old that plays Mozart on a piano has to be born with inherent abilities that the general population just doesn't have. But even the virtuoso has to practice if they want a career with longevity especially as they grow older.

The last time I checked, my IQ was 120. I took an IQ test online, though.

Does that mean that I'm smart? Not at all. I know of people who have very high IQ's and GPA's but these people aren't smart, based on the decisions they make.

I believe that people have the ability to learn and grow mentally. It all depends if the person wants to take the next step in life in order to advance.

Can an IQ score really determine someone's destiny?

IQ Scale

Over 140 - Genius or almost genius
120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence
110 - 119 - Superior intelligence
90 - 109 - Average or normal intelligence
80 - 89 - Dullness
70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency in intelligence
Under 70 - Feeble-mindedness

Normal Distribution of IQ Scores

50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110
70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115
95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130
99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140

Low IQ & Mental Retardation

An IQ under 70 is considered as "mental retardation" or limited mental ability. 5% of the population falls below 70 on IQ tests. The severity of the mental retardation is commonly broken into 4 levels:

50-70 - Mild mental retardation (85%)
35-50 - Moderate mental retardation (10%)
20-35 - Severe mental retardation (4%)
IQ < 20 - Profound mental retardation (1%)

High IQ & Genius IQ

Genius or near-genius IQ is considered to start around 140 to 145. Less than 1/4 of 1 percent fall into this category. Here are some common designations on the IQ scale:
115-124 - Above average
125-134 - Gifted
135-144 - Very gifted
145-164 - Genius
165-179 - High genius
180-200 - Highest genius

The Average On An IQ Scale

The scoring of an IQ test is not the same for everyone, because age is used in determining a score. Intelligence quotient is determined by the "intelligence age" (I A) in relation to the chronological age of the person being tested. IQ scales can differ from each other (Americans use scales with IQ values above 200), but the mean value of most scales is an IQ of 100. This represents normal intelligence.
Think you are smart? Well, if your IQ is 130, that puts you ahead of 98% of people. Of course that means there are still 120 million people who are smarter than you (the other 2%). Also, recent research shows that a person's level of self-discipline is more predictive of success than their IQ level. In other words, don't take too much meaning from your score on an IQ scale.
