Default Spike lee’s “red hook summer” lands distribution deal

Summer in NYC ain’t shit without a Spike Lee joint in movie theaters! Yesterday, the noted auteur and vocal NY Knicks one-man bandwagon announced a distribution deal for Red Hook Summer, the latest film in his “Chronicles of Brooklyn” series.

In a press release announcing the deal yesterday, Lee, last seen making Jeremy Lin puns on Twitter and hosting million dollar plate dinners for Obama in his apartment, revealed that NYC’s Variance Films will partner with 40 Acres & A Mule to distribute Summer, his coming of age story set in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Theatrical release of the film will begin on August 10, 2012 and will go national in 30 markets soon after.

“From my very first joint back in 1986, She’s Gotta Have It, I have been an independent filmmaker, and even today I still am,” said Spike Lee. “I’m elated to join forces with Variance Films for the independent distribution of my new joint Red Hook Summer. We look forward to getting this film into the marketplace, where we believe 100 percent that there is a starving audience for American independent films like Red Hook Summer.

Red Hook Summer tells the tale of Flik, a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta whose world opens up after he spends a summer in the Red Hook Housing Projects with a beautiful girl his age, and a religious grandfather. The film is Lee’s sixth film about Brooklyn, following She’s Gotta Have It, Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn, Clockers, and He Got Game.

Variance Films founder Dylan Marchetti said this about the distribution deal, which was brokered by CAA:

“Spike is truly one of the godfathers of independent filmmaking, and Red Hook Summer is an entertaining, yet thoughtful, film that says something we think needs to be said. We couldn’t be more excited to work with Spike and his team to ensure that audiences across the country will be experiencing this fantastic film with their friends and family.”

No word yet about a sequel to Inside Job, Lee’s most profitable film to date.

Movie looks boring and i won't check it out. I haven't liked a movie from him since Summer Of Sam. He doesn't need a sequel to Inside Man. That movie wasn't that good.

I liked Bamboozled. My favorites of his which i got on dvd are Do The Right Thing and Jungle Fever. I would like to buy Malcolm X and Denzel Washington should've won a oscar for that. Props to Spike for directing The Original Kings Of Comedy with Steve Harvey, DL Hughley, Cedric, Bernie Mac. I got that on dvd and it's very funny.

I just saw it today. it's still got a limited release, so check the movie's website for the locations. it's basically an indie film and won't get a wide release

I kinda liked it, but like most critics already said: the child actors in it were HORRIBLE (like laughable), the music overwhelmed the dialogue at times (not jazz by Terrence Blanchard, just corny christian music), and the story...well...there was no plot whatsoever. the first two-thirds of the movie is just a coming-of-age story, not that interesting until the final act, when....

SPOILERS:

the Baptist preacher, Pastor Enoch (dude from the Wire) turns out to be a child molester (Ghostface Killah would love it). the story gets interesting once that twist is revealed, but it's only at the last half hour and there was no foreshadowing. it was just like, "hey, he fucks boys now."

Spike makes two or three very brief appearances as Mookie, but he doesn't say much. there's some nice visuals of Brooklyn here and there. the sermons were interesting, especially when the pastor grabs his bible and says "this is my gangsta right here!"

with a tighter script, this could've been SO much better. Spike co-wrote it with a tyler perry-like author (the dude who wrote miracle at st. anna) and his writing ain't that good. it's preachy as shit and a little corny.

Thanks for telling me your opinion about it. Now i know i won't be seeing it hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Spike needs to give it a rest making movies. He'll never make a good movie again. I don't understand why his movies don't come to major theatres anymore and only come to independent theatres. Last movie of his i saw at a independent theatre was She Hate Me with Anthony Mackie, Kerry Washington, Woody Harrelson and it sucked. I know Anthony was enjoying fucking lesbians for money so they could get pregnant LOL.

Spike is a great artist, very passionate and only makes the kind of movies he wants to make (except Inside Man, was was great). he always needs to be given the benefit of the doubt just for Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Clockers, and 25th Hour -- all masterpieces.

no studio would finance Red Hook Summer, so he wrote the check himself. I respect that. he co-wrote it with the dude who wrote Miracle at St. Anna and they made the movie they wanted to make. it wasn't great, but I would still recommend it to anybody.

his next movie is "Bad 25," a documentary on Michael Jackson's "Bad" album, which is premiering on ABC in Thanksgiving. it's gotten very good reviews from the film festivals screening so far... after that, he's remaking the Korean film "Oldboy," should be interesting (see the Korean movie if you haven't) and is making a sequel to Inside Man.

She Hate Me is his worst movie, but he made some good documentary films these past few years you guys haven't even see...When the Levee Breaks and all that stuff. it's good stuff
