It's called an adrenaline rush. And judging from the speed of his punch and if you factor in his age, a kid could've taken that hit. Plus, he was struggling to get her off the bus. He's not the strong.

Yes, I am. That's the only thing I can think of. It takes a lot to knock someone out. In her case, an adrenaline rush kicked in and she fought back.
