The Hebrew word yôm was used in the Hebrew translation. Meaning a 24 hour day.

The Bible refers to God being the light. So that when their was darkness before creation, his presence brought light.

"2 Samuel 22:29
29 You are my lamp, O LORD; the LORD turns my darkness into light."

"Matthew 6:22
22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light."

"John 9:5
5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

Of coarse, these interpretations could mean other things. Like knowledge, happiness, or a way out of evil living.
