Ohio neo-Nazi march sparks violence, fire, arrests

At least two dozen people were arrested on Saturday after a planned march by white supremacists in Toledo, Ohio, prompted a crowd to pelt police with rocks and bottles and set a fire, city officials said.

Members of the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement had been scheduled to march under police protection through north Toledo, with anti-Nazi groups set to counter-protest.

But police canceled the event and told the neo-Nazi group to leave as tensions rose and violence erupted nearby, the Toledo Blade reported. The confrontations continued for several hours.

The crowd threw bottles and rocks at police, and some officers and firefighters received minor injuries, officials said. Police cars and a fire truck were damaged.

"We made about two dozen arrests, but quite frankly could have made a couple of hundred arrests easily," Toledo Police Chief Michael Navarre said.

Police started making arrests after a business was set on fire, he said.

"The crowd is temporarily dissipated, that's a good sign, but we are going to have problems here for the next few days," Navarre said. "There will be a very strong police presence in this neighborhood for several days, as long as it takes."

Toledo Mayor Jack Ford blamed the violence on gang members who took advantage of the tensions to settle scores.

"I don't think it was race relations at all. It was some gang members who had real or imagined grievances and took it as an opportunity to speak in their own way over the march, in their park, their area," Ford told reporters.

"That's exactly what (the white supremacist group) wanted," he added.

Navarre said that just about every police officer in the city has been called back to duty and that the Ohio State Patrol had sent officers to help maintain order.

Toledo set an 8 p.m. (0000 GMT on Sunday) curfew aimed at people roaming the streets or alleys.

these hate groups love to get people excited like that. it's hard to ignore them but giving them attention just satisfies them. they want nothing more than a bunch of black people getting arrested. people should just stay home if they come to your town, not go looking for trouble wasting their time with the most worthless people on the planet

they can be fought in other ways, through organizing and counter-activism

they carry out that hate they have for all other races

however the millions more march had no reports of any problems

or crime

neither did the million man march or the million family march

and people equate black men with CRIME

why is this the case

when they call the NOI racist but you never hear of a case where a black man killed a white man over some racist bull shit but you always will hear a case where a black man was killed for being black
