Heh, funny how they don't report none of that on news here. People are incredibly upset, talking about violent overthrow of the "system" all day, and all they need is a spark for the same thing to happen here. So the best you can do is not to put any of that on TV and hope nobody will notice.

Yeah this and we have a clan that is composed of the family of the president and some closed people that are mafioso and they reign over every prosperous business in the country, they take the money of the people and put it on their own personal accounts in europe and else where. the debt of the country before this actual president was 6000 B$ before him and 14 B$ now.

All websites that talk about their shady business are closed, so we dont have youtube for 10 years or more now neither the washington post, the times and such informative sites.

1. How is the situation at the moment, as you are writing, in Tunisia?

I am living in a coastal city called Sousse and these costal parts of the country are not as touched as the rest by the riot (even if it’s coming) because these are touristic places and there’s also more industries that’s why young people are not as desperate as those who live in the internal parts of the country. Nevertheless, students and advocates protested these last days because even if it all started because of unemployment problems now it is more general. A few hours ago people protested here in Sousse and police fired in the air to disperse them.
The riot started to spread lately to all the country and even in the capital Tunis people are protesting in spite of the violence of the police, the beatings and the lachrymal bombs.

2. I read that bloggers and a rapper has disappeared. Do you know anything about that?

Yes but this happens often in Tunisia, especially now because of the last incidents and the relative courage of people who dare talk. But before that, advocates and activists and politicians disappear and get harassed in their home by policemen. The rapper disappeared two days ago and there are rumors that he has been freed today but I don’t think it’s true, it could be the government propaganda. The blogger disappeared last week, and normally when this happens even the family knows nothing about the fate of the kidnapped. They go to ask in police stations and all but they receive no answer. People can be maintained in jail for a long time without been neither judged nor freed.

3. Why are the people uprising and protesting now?

Even if it all started by a single incident of a man who burned himself, that incident was a catalyst that woke Tunisians up, we were silent for too long. People are fed up about the regime and its oppression. All Tunisians understand the desperation of the young man who burned himself and the anger of his city but the reaction of the police was way too aggressive and violent (the right of riot and strike is prohibited in Tunisia).

And starting from then it was a chain reaction, people protested against the violence of the police and the police stroked back more violently until this week-end the army occupied some internal cities as Tela, El Jem etc… They fired at people and killed 8 according to the government (who accused them of wanting to pillage the governmental buildings) and 19 according to people and FB (you have to add this to the 4 or 5 killed last week for the same reasons + 3 people who killed themselves; 2 by the fire and one who climbed an electricity pole).

Even advocates have been assaulted and university professors have been beaten down here in Sousse on Friday.

Moreover, the slogan that comes back often is against the family of the president. They are accused to rob all the money of the country through their shady business. People also request more freedom of speech as everyone who speaks has to visit either jail or the hospital. Youtube is closed as most sites in which you can post videos, also all the Facebook pages that speaks about the president and his family (including famous sites as the Washington post etc… French and English) are unreachable. That’s why Tunisians have recourse to proxies to visit these sites.

4. What do the people you know say about all this?

All people in Tunisia are sympathizing but not all dare go down in the streets because the repression is way too violent and a lot of us have families and a lot to lose. We all know the outcome; jail for years and family harassment or death without any kind of justice. We were silent until lately and we all wish for change so we do our little activist at our own level by sharing FB news, videos and pictures. It is already a never known situation that people post stuff about the president and mockery pictures, videos etc…

5. How does it affect you?

It is not yet affecting me economically, I know it will, but as a Tunisian citizen I know that my country is going straight to the wall. The economic model is at its limits and the propaganda that consists at “every thing’s OK” is fooling nobody anymore. If you add to this the lack of freedoms and the fact that we are treated as ignorant children by the TV and the newspapers which are all under the control of the government, you have an explosive recipe that will blow up soon or later.

6. What will happend next do you think?

There are two options;
1- or the government will weaken and respond positively by permitting more freedom of speech, a real transparency and getting in touch with the people and also a real opposition (which is absent today due to governmental oppressions as not permitting reunions etc…). In this case, it will calm down (for a few more years).

2- the government will stand its ground and get more and more violent (as it is the case) with the rioters, in this case it will certainly calm down soon -one day or another- but the next awake will be worse.

Tunis, Tunisia (CNN) -- The number of people killed during riots in Tunisia recently is about 21, the government said Wednesday, rejecting international media reports that the figure is higher.
Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has fired Interior Minister Rafik Belhaj Kacem, the government announced Wednesday, in the wake of the deadly protests over high unemployment and poor living conditions.
Ahmad Freaa will be his replacement, Minister of Information Samir Abidi announced.
Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi declined to answer a CNN question about whether live ammunition or snipers were used against demonstrators, saying those matters will be part of an investigation into the conduct of the security forces.
Everyone arrested in the past few days has been released other than those accused of looting and vandalism, he said.
Ghannouchi also announced that Tunisia will begin providing a monthly grant and social security coverage to every unemployed person, providing they do nonprofit or volunteer work while looking for jobs.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, urged the Tunisian government in a statement "to ensure that its security forces cease using excessive force against demonstrators, and to launch transparent and credible investigations into the deaths."
While the situation escalated over the weekend, deaths were also previously reported in preceding weeks, the statement said.
"Whatever the precise total (of deaths), I am extremely concerned about the very high number of people killed in Tunisia in recent weeks," Pillay said. "It is essential that basic international human rights norms and guidelines governing the use of firearms are urgently and strictly adhered to."
Reports suggest that most protests have been peaceful and that security forces used excessive force, she said in the statement.
A leading human rights group, Amnesty International, condemned Friday what it called a violent crackdown by Tunisian authorities on the recent protests.
The wave of demonstrations was sparked by the suicide of an unemployed college graduate in early December.
Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in front of a government building in the town of Sidi Bouzid after police confiscated his fruit cart, saying he was selling without a permit, according to Amnesty International. He died January 4 from his injuries.
The protests grew in size and sometimes turned violent.
Human rights groups said last week at least three others have died since the protests started -- two demonstrators shot by police and another man who electrocuted himself by touching a 30,000-megawatt pole and shouting, "No to misery! No to unemployment!"
Amnesty reported that 10 other protesters have been injured in confrontations with security forces and that lawyers have been singled out for beatings and arrest after a nationwide sit-in on December 31.
If there is evidence that members of the security forces have used excessive force or conducted extra-judicial killings, they should be arrested, tried and -- if convicted -- punished, Pillay said in the statement.
She also expressed concern about reports of widespread arrests, including those of human rights advocates and bloggers advocating human rights, as well as reports that those detained are being mistreated and tortured.
"While it is correct that people should be arrested if there is evidence they have committed crimes such as violence or arson, no one should be arrested or harassed for standing up for human rights," she said. "Human rights defenders and bloggers, arrested solely for their peaceful activities, must be released immediately."
Tunisian authorities have said they are acting in self-defense. Security forces fired on protesters in December, the state-run TAP news agency reported at the time.
Witnesses say the demonstrators consisted largely of people urging the government to improve social services. Tunisia's government called them violent troublemakers.
Tunisia has been ruled for 23 years by Ben Ali, an ally of Western powers and a target of activist and human rights groups that claim he runs a corrupt police state that has infringed on citizens' rights.
