No i think its clear youre one of the motherfuckers who dont know what backpack is.

You only have a limited grasp of what back pack movement is by trying to box it into 1thing like that.

Either way, you extra failed for trying to separate graffiti culture and hip hop in the first place.

Graf and hip hop have been together since the genesis. So saying back pack is graffiti hip hop, is just stupid. All hip hop is graffiti hip hop.

I can tell you now that few of them are smarter then Jay-z, whom is fucking brilliant, or Nas, who is intelligent and despite the backpack movements strive to claim him has always been street/gangsta/or commercial rap
you missed my point

like i already said back pack lyrics and content is about is varied as it can be (in the past)

i mean like people like talib and mos were more self aware than say mystikal or juvenile

back pack is just postmodernism in hip hop

sometimes ironic and self referential, and occasionally absurd (MF DOOM)

and to qoute websters:

of, relating to, or being any of various movements in reaction to modernism that are typically characterized by a return to traditional materials and forms
thisviddeo, even though i thought it was pompous, is a great example of the emergence of postmodern thinkning in hip hop

But this existed even before that.

The original definition of backpack rap has already been shown in this thread. There are other songs that prove that backpack rap has everything to do with going around tagging etc. PackFM's song "Backpack" or something along that line discussed the contents of his backpack, thus displaying the typical contents inside the backpack of a "backpacker", and one of these is almost always a can of paint.

I think in recent times the term backpack has been used to generalize anything that has to do with regressing to the past or some sort of collective consciousness which is obviously lacking in today's mainstream. Its become derogatory almost, because of the extent of the generalization. I think you're focusing too heavily on the mainstream definition of the term "backpack" rap.

would all you squares shut the fuck up... backpack rap refers to graffiti artists who held hip hop tapes in their backpacks because a writer usually always has a backpack on... it has nothing to do with graffiti itself, it was just a term used with graf artists to specify that the raps they acquired were from a fellow writers nap sack, hence the term back pack rap

carry on

good thread, i never had a solid definition of "backpack" rap. in my opinion its always been more oriented towards graffiti and conscious lyrics. De La Soul, Souls of Mischief, Mos Def, Talib, Del (more so around Deltron 3030 era), Organized Konfusion, KMD, Black Moon, The Roots (more of their early music), Common....

i think what can be taken from this thread is that the term "backpack" rap has a wide definition depending on the listener and the culture around them. but for me its definitely rooted in graf and conscious street lyrics

Have to disagree with a lot of this.

If you say back pack is 'rooted in graf', that just doesnt make sense, that would make LL Cool J and any other 80's rapper easily identified as back pack.

And saying its based on conscious street lyrics would also make groups like P.E, and BDP labelled as back pack, which they arent.

Would you call MF DOOM, conscious ? He only became whats considered back pack AFTER he dropped the conscious lyrics. And we're talking about a guy some people say invented back pack rap.

Imo, back pack rap can only be described as a reaction against modernist sounds by reintroducing traditional or classical elements of style or by carrying modernist styles or practices to extremes.

Those of you trying to define backpack sound as any specific thing (like conscious lyrics, graffiti culture) are failing because the reason something is postmodern, is 'post-' because it is denies the existence of any ultimate principles.

This definition of the postmodernist musical attitude seems to define back pacck rap perfectly
Quote:
  1. is not simply a repudiation of modernism or its continuation, but has aspects of both a break and an extension
  2. is, on some level and in some way, ironic - Kanye West
  3. does not respect boundaries between sonorities and procedures of the past and of the present
  4. challenges barriers between 'high' and 'low' styles
  5. shows disdain for the often unquestioned value of structural unity
  6. questions the mutual exclusivity of elitist and populist values - Mos Def/Common
  7. avoids totalizing forms (e.g., does not want entire pieces to be tonal or serial or cast in a prescribed formal mold) - Madlib
  8. considers music not as autonomous but as relevant to cultural, social, and political contexts - Talib Kweli/Mr Lif
  9. includes quotations of or references to music of many traditions and cultures - The heavy Sampling of peak era back pack
  10. considers technology not only as a way to preserve and transmit music but also as deeply implicated in the production and essence of music - perfectly describes back pack producers geeky obsession with their samplers and beat machines
  11. embraces contradictions - Common/Kanye
  12. distrusts binary oppositions
  13. includes fragmentations and discontinuities
  14. encompasses pluralism and eclecticism - MF DOOM
  15. presents multiple meanings and multiple temporalities
  16. locates meaning and even structure in listeners, more than in scores, performances, or composers
some examples added. You could also throw RJD2, El-P, JDilla and whoever else onto a lot of those too.

Back to the original thread question, interesting how its more difficult to define the first artist to come out, but easy to name labels that are clearly back pack (Rawkus, Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Nature Sounds).

this especially holds true imo. Madlib maybe the epitome of the backpack sound
