saying hiphop is dead is a blanket statement. you're basically saying that it no longer exists like the soviet union or dinosaurs or something. such a statement is just not true when hiphop is a commercial juggernaut right now.

i think you have to be more specific and say that the creative spirit of hiphop is dead.

that is just a commercialism of the biz but doesnt mean the culture is dead. G-unit has graffiti in some of their videos and they keep the same party atmosphere as the past.

how come when it wasnt lyrical then its hip hop but now its not lyricaly it isnt hip hop?

every single artist wants money and KRS wishes he was selling plat him saying he doesnt would be a lie. he just has to live with the fact that he isnt whats popular.

wu tang and lyrical ppl were getting signed because thats what was in at the time. it was still about money just cause the topics of the songs change doesnt hurt hip hop at all.

No kidding it's a culture. Doesn't mean that the music that is more along the lines of it's original roots, meaning the music that teaches and inspires, is anything less than "Hip-Hop Music." So it's not JUST a culture. The fact that the image of hip-hop is widespread only means that the people who couldn't stop it's influence, are now trying to cash in on it. Most of what you see is a watered-dwon version of the culture, and you know it.
As far as I'm concerned, it is what your music sounds like and how original you are that defines wether you deserve to be called one of the "Hip-Hop Giants." I won't listen to some crunk shit, and say, "Oh well, it's all hip-hop." because the bottom line is you're trying to make sugar out of shit. None of the popular music can be called "real". Like Hell Razah said, the majority of these cats are "Industry groupies, livin' after movies." If you don't talk about real life, you're not real. I could give a fuck what genre you CALL yourself apart of.

but you cant say that that music isnt hip hop just because its less lyrical. if you go to the south its more of a party atmosphere. they want to party, think about it...they are known for Black Colleges, good clubs, and strip clubs so why wouldnt ppl make music to party to? it isnt all making a commercial song to get sales cause in the long run only the label gets that money from sales not the artist. but what if ur an artist and u go to the south and make a hot club track and everyone is going nuts off it. does that not make u feel good? you all assume that they are just trying to make a quick buck but maybe some are doing it to entertain the crowd that they know.

we cant be region biased its not fair. whats popular in the south isnt in NY whats popular in the west isnt whats popular in the midwest.

Hip hop ain't dead...

People just don't buy the quality music anymore... They buy what they are served, instead of finding the good emcees theirself...

Collecta, I ain't region biased, if I was, groups from The South who DO keep the spiritual creativity of the Hip-Hop culture alive, like Little Brother, OutKast, Goodie Mob, The Geto Boyz (who started the South's fame in Hip-Hop if you ask me) wouldn't get any props from me, strictly because of where they're from. Truth be told, the city that I'm most disgusted with is my own. New York.

While cats are like, "We started this, we own this....etc." None of them are making classic music. It's all about a quick buck, instead of makin' a truely decent if not all around dope track.
It's not about skills anymore, it's about how much money you can make, how many broads you have, and how many whips you can claim, AND THAT SHIT IS WEAK!!!!!!

It's not a regional thing, the reason why I'm pissed, is because I sometimes wonder how I would've turned out if I had decided to go with what was popular, instead of what speaks to the soul.
There's 9 year old kids who, if you asked them what hip-hop was, they would start talkin' about ice, grills, and all the other material bullshit that's mistaken for what the culture stands for.
While dancing, jewelry, and foxy ladies have always been part of the culture, they were never THE CULTURE. That's my point. Meanwhile, if you were to ask them "What do you know about Boogie Down Productions?" "You ever heard "The Bridge Is Over??"
Questions that all Hip-Hop heads know about, they wouldn't be able to answer. Now while it's their parents and freinds who bombard them with the garbage music, it's also a case of, after years of conditioning, not wanting to hear anything else. So, while artists like Immortal Technique and Dead Prez not only make ill tracks and educational tracks, they also make the listener WANT to learn, and expand his/her outlook and insight. Meanwhile, most commercial artists do the exact opposite. The listeners who have nothing in their collections BUT the commercial music, are as dumb as doornails. Yes, Ghostface, and Raekwon were the ones who talked about their clothes the most out of the Clan, but how often they did it, and THE WAY they did it, was such that, it really didn't matter to us.

Lyrical Content, or lack thereof is where my main beef lies with artists. Of whatever city. The main reason I couldn't stand Ja Rule, was because his first album was sick. Then, he just went for the cash. Bein' from New York has it's prides and prejudices when it comes to Boroughs. Mine being Queens, when Nas went from "Illmatic" and "It Was Written" to "I Am" and "Nastradamus", I was like, "WTF?!!???" Now although with "Stillmatic" and especially "God's Son", he's proved he can still make it happen, how often does that happen?? An artist going back to his creative roots after he's dummied down his music for other people, and sayin' "Fuck it, I'm gonna do me.", when doing them was what got them there in the first place?
Most are too busy counting money and whores.
