lyrical rappers havent gone anywere and as far commercial success lyrical rappers have never been on top at any time. it was the entertainers that sold the records and got the coverage.

Lyrical rappers have never been on top at any time? I guess you never listened to rap in the 1990's. Wu Tang Clan was probably the biggest thing in hip hop for a period, not to mention Notorious Big, Nas, Mobb Deep, Boot Camp click, etc etc were all extremely popular in their time....

with the exception of biggie(who was quite the entertainer in his own right) none of those rappers were ON TOP in those times. they were certainly more relevent.

from 1992 to 1996 hiphop was death row's house, all the other guys were paying rent. new york may have been the only place death row wasnt popular at the time and you can shalk that up to new york hatin on everything thats not from new york or at least the east coast even to this day.
in 1997 death row faded and bad boy(biggie, puffy, mase) took over from 1997 to 1999. then no limit came up and knocked them off and went on from 1999 to 2001. then cash money took over, etc, etc. but you are right with biggie being one of the VERY few skilled lyricists to reach the top of the game. though i'd say he didnt get to the top of hiphop by being lyrical, he got there by being an entertainer. he was able to fit into the mold of what sold records.
