Mos Def Headlining Apollo Theater Fundraiser

Rapper Mos Def will be the featured performer during The Apollo Theater Foundation's Third Annual Spring Fundraiser on June 11.

The event, which will be hosted by comedian Chris Tucker, is a tribute to James Brown.

During the evening, The Apollo will bestow the 2007 Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis Humanitarian Award to Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick.

The evening is designed to raise funds for the 73-year-old theater and its initiatives for artists, education programs, and community outreach efforts in New York and other areas.

"It is our mission to preserve and develop our legendary Theater through the Apollo Experience of world-class live performances that honor the influence and advance the contributions of African-American artists, as well as emerging creative voices across cultural and artistic media," said Jonelle Procope, president and CEO of the Apollo.

Mos Def and his Big Band will headline a tribute concert to James Brown which will also feature a performance by James Brown's legendary saxaphone player, Maceo Parker, and Dance Theatre of Harlem Dancing Through Barriers Ensemble.
