Enraged DA Leader threatens to sue SAPS
Democratic Alliance leader and City of Cape Town mayor, Helen ZilleSeptember 10, 2007, 17:45
Democratic Alliance leader and City of Cape Town mayor, Helen Zille, has threatened to sue the South African Police Service (SAPS). This comes after she and nine others were arrested during an anti-drug campaign on the Cape Flats yesterday.
Zille will be appearing in the Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court tomorrow. She supported the People's Anti-Drug and Liquor Action Committee during their legal march through the streets of Mitchell's Plain. But when one of its members knocked on the door of an alleged drug-dealer police cried foul saying this was in contravention of the conditions of the march. One man was arrested.
Zille and the marchers went to the police station to query his arrest which is when she was arrested. Zille says what happened yesterday was entirely unwarranted at a legal and peaceful march. She says their rights were completely overtrodden, and they should not accept that.
Community members say all they want to do is assist police in their battle against drugs in this area. They say they want to be viewed as allies not enemies.
The Western Cape department of Community Safety and Security has accused Zille of using her position to break the law. The department says her actions were not in line with the intergovernmental framework act - which promotes good relations between the three spheres of government.
