to be an functional being means that you exist, but then you must make purpose to your existance. people who have no passion or motivation are the ones who are dead even if by physically being functional they still exist.

life = purpose

without pupose, you have no life and the opposite of life is death. there's a difference between life and existance and a difference between death and extinction.

existance and exstinction deal with the physical
life and death deal with the emotional, mental, and spiritual.
