Its already been answered. Its a sugar branch. People used to chew on them all the time. I can't believe people here haven't seen that before. Chewing on plastic spoons is also pretty common too.

In NY we call it a chew stick. It comes in all kinds of flavors from vanilla to cherry. You can get it from the African vendors all over the city. Some flavors taste better than others, but after a while it don't taste so good.
