so the og elements, mcing, djing, graffitti, breakdancing, have they been replaced now?
Mcing- now obviously the main element, rapping has completely overtaken all other elements, with everyone with a mouth fancying themselves as an MC these days, less people are attracted to graf writing, DJing or breakdancing than they were in the past, where only the dopest would be MC's. VERDICT: ALIVE. DJing - So many DJs now are quitting to be producers. Still alot of the big mainstream producers out there started out as DJ's (toomp, just blaze, swizz beatz for e.g), but it seems that this trend is also dying, and alot of producers are coming up not from the decks, but from their bedrooms. I said everyone is an MC these days, well with computers even more people think they are producers than ever before. Its also less beneficial for hip hop producers to of been DJ's in their past as sampling use has almost dissapered for most underground artists who cant afford the huge bills for using samples. Radio DJ's are no longer real DJ's, they are just personalities. Even old school classic producers like Flex are no longer real DJ's, they just get paid to play the biggest hits. VERDICT: DEAD. Graffiti - Still a major player, graf has spread from the streets of new york to every corner of the world since the 80's, and is still a big part of alot of rap videos even in the mainstream. The amount of kids from the street who are doing it seriously though, may of dropped, it has become less of a hood thing. VERDICT: ALIVE. B-boying. OK, breakdancing on the streets may of long gone, but dance moves are still a real big part of the commercial urban music scene. Most of these dance moves seen on MTV and BET are majorly influenced form 80's breakdancing styles, so even though backpackers hate al these new dances, I think b-boying is still alive, just in a new way. And has never been bigger. B-boying has also spread, like graf, all around the world, B boy and girl competitions have entrie crews from all over the world. VERDICT: ALIVE. So is hip hop really dead? Quailty i think has been diluted, due to the sheer amount of people practising the art form these days. Cynics might say the new elements of hip hop are things like, how much bling round your neck (slick rick anyone?), cars, beef, producers, and swag rather than MC ability.

Hip hop is clearly alive.
What I would like from artists in 09: Quality punchlines that are not delivered aggressively. Quality beats that are catchy and soothing, nothing aggressive. I'd like rappers to be calm on the mic, delivering each word so you can understand it perfectly. Without stress. New, young cats. As much as I anticipate albums from OutKast, Raekwon, RZA, Deck, Rakim, CunninLynguists... I'd rather welcome a new rapper who spits fire rocks on the mic. That's all. |

DJin' is alive and well. Me and a lot of people I know are living proof thereof. Fuck a mainstream because what happens there doesn't reflect anything in the real world. It's all a facade. Fuck what Swizz and them used to do, I bet you if any of them went up against Roc Raida or DJ QBert, they'd get a good sound ass-whippin' for lack of practice. If DJ Premier can produce and DJ, and still make shit for people like Christina Aguilera, then everyone else has no excuse, other than the fact that they chose to sell out.
Just because it's not seen in the mainstream doesn't mean shit. The underground to the mainstream is as the spine to the body. If any form of Hip-Hop culture were truely dead, then there would be no recognizable forms of it to refer to and compare, AT ALL. It may not be in abundance the way most of us would like it to be, but the shit isn't dead. No part of it.

DJing aint dead, the concept is gonna be introduced to a new generation of kids, but they will still never experience the real thing Activision CEO Bobby Kotick confirms DJ Hero Game With Physical Turntables Authored by Jay Baage on January 30, 2009 - 11:07am. Davos, Switzerland - Activision Blizzard (NASD: ATVI) CEO Bobby Kotick confirmed on Friday that a new music-centered video game called "DJ Hero" is in development and due out in 2009:"We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year, which is a turntable that you actually can play competitively and spin discs and mix songs," he said during a CNBC interview. There had been rumors about DJ Hero based on a trademark filing and speculation that B-Boy developer Freestyle Games had been bought out by Activision to work on it, according to Eurogamer. Activision Blizzard own the Guitar Hero franchise which has had over $1 billion in sales since it was introduced in 2005 and paved the way for a new, hugely successful genre in gaming, with the addition of the physical experience of playing along with the music on an electronic instrument-like controller. Poll: Will Activision's New Video Game DJ Hero Be As Successful As Guitar Hero? DJING IN HIP HOP IS DEAD
fact. that is at least compared to what DJing in hip hop was like in the 80's, it is def dead. You ever heard of Serato? Even people like Premier love Serato, vinyl is DEAD or very near so, people dont even need vinyl to scratch anymore, they have Serato. Real DJing is not involved importantly in hip hop anymore, no one can deny that. How can DJing in hip hop be alive if no DJs are using vinyll anymore?
