I'm sure there's a lot of black NBA players who are in Delonte's situation and gotta get a job until the lockout ends because they haven't saved their money. Did Kobe Bryant sign a contract with a overseas team? I read awhile ago that he was almost close to signing a contract with a overseas team. I don't think Lebron is gonna play overseas. Dwayne Wade said he doesn't know what he's gonna do but he said he wants to play somewhere. I wonder why he said that because he should have enough money saved to live on until the lockout ends. I really hope the players and owners come to a agreement soon because i'm gonna be mad if there isn't any NBA basketball this season.

The Los Angeles Lakers‘ Ron Artest has spent the majority of his basketball career stirring up controversy with his own brand of joie de vivre. The eccentric, at times rowdy, small forward and shooting guard now graces this column for a linguistic reason. Artest plans on officially changing his name to Metta World Peace. If, as our recent post conjectures, our given names play a part in predetermining our destinies – what does the future hold for Mr. World Peace (and what does Metta World Peace mean?)

Metta is derived from the Pali language, an ancient tongue in which Buddhist scriptures were composed. The following attributes can be attributed to “metta:”loving-kindness, friendliness, goodwill, benevolence, fellowship, amity, concord, inoffensiveness and non-violence. In Buddhist teachings, the practice of metta focuses on kindness and love towards all beings.

“World” is derived from the Old English weorold meaning “human existence, the affairs of life.” The Germanic translation we-ald literally means, “age of man.” The Modern English translation refers to “the earth or globe, considered as a planet.”

“Peace” is derived from the mid-12th century Anglo-Norman pes meaning, “freedom from civil disorder,” and the Latin ‘pacem’ or ‘pax’ meaning, “treaty of peace, tranquility, absence of war.” The Modern English use of the word as a personal greeting began around the early 13th century as a translation of the biblical term ‘pax’ – as in “peace be with you.”

It could be construed that Mr. Metta World Peace is on a path to global and spiritual enlightenment. Before he travels too far he may want to take a little time to shoot some hoops with the 6’9” power forward from Erie Community College who goes by the name, “God’s Gift Achiuwa” – that’s a match we’d like to see.

Even though most of these trips are, sadly, lockout-inspired, it's still pretty cool to see NBA stars head overseas for a bit of goodwill, some iffy basketball, and a few thousand units of shoes and apparel sold. And though China features a professional league featuring first class accommodations, it's still sometimes tough to brave the elements in a setting you're not used to. Even indoors.

Because apparently both Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce(notes) and mercurial Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley(notes) suffered asthma attacks while playing for a barnstorming team called the "Kentucky Bisons" in Shaungyshan, China on Monday. You're allowed to smoke cigarettes in arenas over in China -- nobody would even show up for games if you couldn't in that cigarette-crazy country -- and Pierce and Beasley were taken aback. To say the least.

Here's the report, via a local newspaper, through an online translator, and via the fantastic China hoops blog NIUBball.com:

While playing in Shuangyashan, Heilongjiang province… Pierce and Beasley both suffered asthma attacks due to large amounts of fans smoking cigarettes inside the stadium. After the game, things got even more shocking when Beasley fell to the floor in his hotel and started to roll around in obvious pain, scaring everyone around half-to-death. At that point, there was no choice but to dial 120 (the number for an ambulance in China) and take him to the hospital.

Beasley had apparently hurt his wrist on a dunk attempt during one of the games, but using his typically spot-on Beasley-esque clarity and vision, decided to participate in a slam dunk contest following the injury. Thus, perhaps, a broken wrist. Bad news when your employer, caregiver, and insurance provider have all effectively locked you out of any contact, even for medical emergencies.

The asthma attack is scary as well. We can't be completely sure both Pierce and Beasley were doubled over and in real danger, for all we know they may have just needed to take a breather after trying to work through those hazy conditions, but it's a frightening thought never the less. Especially for Pierce, who is just 11 years removed from taking stab woulds to his chest and lungs.

We can't blame Chinese fans for doing what they've always done during these sorts of games, namely smokin' 'em if they got 'em. But barnstorming NBA players do need to know that things are a little, um, different over there. And to perhaps bring a painter's mask to help things go down a little smoother.
