#101-91

#101 - Queen

No Said Date
2004
Masta Killa
True Master
Samples:
Gladys Knight & The Pips - The Makings Of You
Classic vote: 39.13%

The softer side of the Wu-Tang Clan is rarely explored and an even rarer occurrence is when that side is appreciated by the fan base. Rounding out the new Top 101 is Queen by Masta Killa from his long awaited debut. Overlapping chopped up samples featuring simple slow percussion and piano loops provide an easy sea for Masta to navigate with his deliberate lyrics.

#100 - Ill Figures

Chamber Music
2009
Raekwon, M.O.P., Kool G. Rap
Fizzy Womack, Josh Werner

Classic vote: 40.00%

A Gritty street beat comprised of bass guitar, keyboard, and simple percussion with Kung Fu samples filling in for the hook, is a simple formula for success. Rap veterans, Kool G. Rap and M.O.P. join Raekwon in weaving street tales over live instrumentation.

#99 -Who Got It

The Movement
2004
Inspectah Deck
Ayatollah

Classic vote:
40.00%

Hollow Dartz pick:

Who Got It uses a chopped up sample over easy slow percussion to form the guts of the harmony. Without much instrumentation at all, Ayatollah manages to make a full, rich atmosphere with Deck aptly spitting his braggadocious flow.

#98 - Once Upon a Time

The Lex Diamond Story
2004
Raekwon, Tekitha
Spontaneous

Classic vote: 47.06%

Pandemic's pick:

The only song from the dreadful Lex Diamond Story to make the countdown, Once upon a Time is essentially a Tekitha solo with Raekwon verses added afterward. Soft piano and oscillating strings provide a wonderful melody for Tekitha to clear her beautiful pipes, while Rae attempts to sound charming.

#97 - Gihad

Only Built for Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Raekwon, Ghostface Killah
Necro

Classic vote: 37.50%

The first of nine tracks from the Cuban Linx sequel on our countdown is also the first single from Raekwon's return to fame. Gihad features an Islamic
repeating chorus over percussion that fluctuates from muffled to not, and low bass guitar notes. Ghostface is standout on the end, providing comedic patter to an otherwise serious album.

#96 - Babies

Iron Flag
2001
Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, GZA, Madame D.
RZA

Classic vote: 38.46%

Claaa7's pick:

Muffled trumpet and an intro by Madame D kick off this dark city tale by the Wu. Indian percussion and bass guitar drive the melody while Ghost, Rae, and GZA weave a yarn about a crooked cop.

#95 - Sparring Minds

Legend of a Liquid Sword
2002
GZA, Inspectah Deck
Arabian Knight
Classic vote: 39.13%

beautifulrock's pick:

Slamming sirens and piano chords envelop the background of this largely overlooked masterpiece. Although mostly rhetoric and innuendo, spiced with quirky metaphors and brash declarations, this track is a head nodder, thanks to the production of Arabian Knight.

#94 - Ason Jones

Only Built for Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Raekwon

J. Dilla
Samples:
JJ Barnes - You Are Just a Living Doll
Classic vote: 37.50%

Claaa7's pick:

A wonderful tribute track by Raekwon to the late Russell Jones is backed by a beat from the late J Dilla. Actual audio clips of Ol' Dirty Bastard speaking about realness in relation to the hood, provide interludes to the verses by a heavy hearted Rae.

#93 - Alex (Stolen Script)

More Fish
2006
Ghostface Killah

MF DOOM
Samples:
Henry Mancini - The Thief Who Came to Dinner
Classic vote: 41.67%

Pandemic's pick:

Ghostface on some Hardy Boys shit, with MF DOOM dropping a beat straight out of a seventies Bond movie. This is just a great story, so vivid, so real. Ghost knows how to suck the listener in, giving tracks like this huge replay value.

#92 - Stapleton Sex

The Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City
2009
Ghostface Killah

Sean C & LV

Classic vote: 44.00%

Ghost continues his habit of dropping his dirtiest sexual thoughts on record with Stapleton Sex, the lone entry from Ghost's R&B experiment on the countdown. Bells, acoustic guitar and bass are almost drowned out by the constant moaning and sounds of ecstasy in the background.

#91 - Walk Wit Me

Only Built for Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Raekwon

Scram Jones
Samples:
Raekwon - Guillotine (Swordz)
Classic vote: 37.50%

The very popular European bonus track from Raekwon's Cuban linx sequel, Walk Wit Me has an infectious voice over sample, and fast life lyrics by Raekwon in Mafioso mode.

#90-81

#90 - Koto Chotan

Birth of a Prince
2003
RZA, Masta Killa, Tash Mahogany
RZA
Classic vote: 44.12%

RZA speeds up and slows down a loop a la Brooklyn Babies, and he, Masta Killa, and surprisingly Tash Mahogany each rip great verses over one of his more interesting compositions. Sentimental favorite for having a woman rap well on one of their songs.

#89 - Holla

The Pretty Toney Album
2004
Ghostface Killah, Allah Real
Ghostface Killah
Samples:
La La (Means I Love You) - The Delphonics
Classic vote: 36.36%

Hollow Dartz Pick:

Easily one of Ghost's most soulful joints, it's hard to take credit for producing a track where he's essentially rapping over an instrumental with hooks, but he does anyway. The strange thing is, it's a masquerade of soulfulness, as the lyrics are really hard and descriptive of his lifestyle. It goes from angry to depressed in an instant, and keeps the listener intrigued.

#88 - Be Easy

Fishscale
2006
Ghostface Killah, Trife
Pete Rock
Samples:
The Sylvers - Stay Away From Me
Classic vote: 42.11%

As slapstick as Ghost gets, Be Easy talks about a typical night out with the crew pissin' in Cristal bottles and dissin' their rival's lack of pussy. One of Trife's shining moments.

#87 - Josephine
More Fish
2006
Ghostface Killah, Trife,
The Willie Cottrell Band
Hi-Tek
Classic vote: 45.83%

Another cautionary tale by Ghost with Trife in tow, Josephine tells the story of a woman addicted to crack. Acoustic guitar and electric keyboard provide a mellow melody to set the mood.

#86 - Evil Deeds

Chamber Music
2009
Ghostface Killah, RZA, Havoc
Fizzy Womack, Andrew Kelley, Noah Rubin
Classic vote: 40.00%

Slamming low piano notes and classical breaks push this infectious beat with an utterly repeatable hook. Havoc's guest appearance pales in comparison to the Wu brothers who leave memorable verses. A dark but beautiful record.

#85 - Strawberry

Bulletproof Wallets
2001
Ghostface Killah, Killa Sin, RZA, GZA
Mathematics
Samples:
David Porter -
Storm In The Summertime
Classic vote: 45.83%

Ghostface enlists the help of one of the better Killa Bees, Killa Sin, to talk about one of his favorite subjects, pussy. Never failing to be as descriptive and nasty as possible, Ghost once again makes the listener a voyeur into his escapades.

#84 - Old Man

No Said Date
2004
Masta Killa, RZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard
RZA
Samples:
Quincy Jones - The Sanford and Son Theme (The Streetbeater)

Classic vote: 41.30%

Utilizing one of the most popular Sitcom themes of the 70's, RZA composes a funky beat for he and Masta Killa to spit over. Dirty is a huge highlight here, providing a fast food order as well as humming the beat in a gruff manner.

#83 - Cold Outside

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Suga Bang Bang
The BeatChefs

Classic vote: 42.50%

review by Claaa7 and beautifulrock

Clearly the sequel to predecessor Cuban Linx' “Rainy Dayz”, producers The BeatChefs dive into a full-blown epic sound fittingly using a sample from the “Godfather II”. Elegant brass dominates the melody while Raekwon and Ghost find themselves reflecting over the downside and seriousness of the violent and sordid life in the hoods they grew up in, equating to strong performances by both.

Perhaps not on the same level as “Rainy Dayz”, but an admirable sequel none-the-less, Ghostface Killah’s verse completely steals the show here. Filled with his trademark visceral details which would make Quentin Tarantino proud, vivid lines like
“Swastikas on the top of churches; they Satan” and “they found a 2-year old strangled to death, with a Love Daddy shirt on” prove Ghost still ranks among the best storytellers hip-hop has ever witnessed.

#82 - Radioactive (Four Assassins)

Iron Flag
2001
GZA, Raekwon, Method Man, Masta Killa
RZA

Classic vote: 43.59%

A wildly erratic experimental beat by RZA somehow works with the four emcees bringing each of their tell tale flow in a lyrical dance that plays like a sword fight. One of the more criticized tracks on the countdown, the tendency is, you love it or hate it.

#81 - Stick Me For My Riches

8 Diagrams
2007
Method Man, Inspectah Deck, RZA, GZA, Gerald Alston
RZA, Mathematics

Classic vote: 42.22%

beautifulrock's pick:

A friend once commented to me that this song was the CREAM of 8 diagrams. I couldn't help but agree. While another source of split feelings on an album that many tried to hate or love, this song remains one of the musical triumphs in the career of Wu-Tang. The haunting echo, meant to sound like sirens, the ever changing percussion, and the amazing pipes of Gerald Alston, all combine for an incredible 6 minute listening experience.

#80-71

#80 - Dopium

Dopium
2009
U-God
Teddy Ted & J. Serbe
Classic vote: 44.44%

U-God promises by the end of this track you'll be a fan. Dopium features hypnotic chopped up repeating voice samples and Baby U methodically slang rapping through the entire track.

#79 - 9 Milli Bros.

Fishscale
2006
Ghostface Killah, RZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Cappadonna, Metod Man, GZA, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, U-God
MF DOOM
Samples:
MF DOOM
- Fenugreek

Classic vote: 44.74%

beautifulrock's pick:

There are a million reasons to hate this track and they pretty much can all be ignored. People want to complain about mailed in verses or Deck having a cold, but none of it changes the fact this was the first track in 4 years that the whole clan jumped on. It was the first Wu-Tang track after Cappa became a cab driver. It was memorable, and not just for it's faults.

#78 - You Know I'm No Good

More Fish
2006
Ghostface Killah, Amy Winehouse
Mark Ronson

Classic vote: 50.00%

Ghostface adds verses to Mark Ronson's sultry jazzy overture featuring the notorious Amy Winehouse. Brass, piano and a slick drum kit complete with scratches highlight this commercial success.

#77 - Maxine

Bulletproof Wallets
2001
Ghostface Killah, Raekwon
RZA
Samples:
JJ Johnson
- Harlem Clavinette

Classic vote: 50.00%

The story of Mooney the drug dealer is told vividly by Ghost and Rae. RZA provides a rich backdrop of trumpets, funk guitar, and electic guitar strikes. This is storytelling rap at it's finest.

#76 - Konichiwa Bitches

4:21...The Day After
2006
Method Man
RZA

Classic vote: 46.34%

Wade's pick:

Breezy strings and scratches over a thumping beat provided by RZA give Method Man a landscape for his homicidal lyrics. The moniker that GZA threw out on Chappelle's show is finally used for a song title.

#75 -Street Opera

More Fish
2006
Ghostface Killah, Sun God
Fantom of the Beats
Samples:
Michael Jackson - Ain't No Sunshine
Classic vote: 50.00%

The repeating loop of Michael Jackson as a kid is a huge initial draw here as Ghost jumps back and forth with his son, Sun God and goes as far to mention running trains up in the Days Inn. There's nothing like warm family moments.

#74 - Flowers (Original Version)

Unreleased (Sample Clearance Issues)
2001
Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Method Man, Superb
RZA
Samples:
Bob James -
Take Me To The Mardi Gras

Classic vote: 50.00%

The more popular of the two versions of Flowers is the one that did not actually appear on Bulletproof Wallets. a breezy electric keyboard is sorely missing from the revised version of what could have been a great song on a great album.

#73 - Rushing Elephants

8 Diagrams
2007
Raekwon, GZA, RZA, Masta Killa
RZA

Classic vote: 46.67%

Wade's pick:

Evoking the inner nerd in all of us, RZA pulls a rabbit out of his proverbial hat with this gem, a fantasy landscape filled with pounding bass, loud brass, and sharp woodwinds. Considering this is an original composition, it is clear that RZA has come into his own as a musician. Great verses by all.

#72 - See the Joy

Birth of a Prince
2003
RZA
RZA
Samples:
Nat Dove & The Devils - Joy

Classic vote: 50.00%

To me, this is the strangest song on the countdown. Join Bobby RZAtal as he is a sperm. An interesting yet lumbering beat guides Bobby on his journey with an amazing sample on the hook, which to me is the biggest draw.

#71 - Kilo

Fishscale
2006
Ghostface Killah, Raekwon
MoSS
Samples:
Jimmy Van & Richard Hieronymus - I Weigh with Kilos
Classic vote: 50.00%

An instantly likable hook and a hard to get used to percussion of razor tapping mirror combine in harmony to make Kilo, an enigma of a track on Fishscale. Ghost's final verse naming colored tops and drug paraphernalia is standout.

#70-61

#70 - Say

4:21...The Day After
2006
Method Man
Erick Sermon
Samples:
Lauryn Hill - So Much Things to Say
Classic vote: 48.78%

A very personal account by Method Man detailing his feelings on the game. Bolstered by the commercial success of Lauryn Hill and Mef's emotional verses, it's easy to see why this track is so liked.

#69 - In the Hood

Iron Flag
2001
RZA, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Streetlife, Suga Bang Bang
RZA
Samples:
Barbara and the Browns - In My Heart
Dennis "Johnny" Hawksworth - Intro: Salute To Thames

Classic vote: 51.28%

The opening track of Iron Flag, features blasting truck horns, shrill trumpets, machine gun fire, and thumping bass. Streetlife has one of the more memorable verses in his career here.

#68 - All In Together Now

Grandmasters
2005
GZA, RZA
Muggs
Samples:
Ol' Dirty Bastard - Hippa To Da Hoppa

Classic vote: 54.84%

A simple repeating electric guitar riff and drum kit are mixed with a popular Dirty sample on this simple yet effective banger by GZA. This is the second song with this same title by Wu-Tang. (Nigga Please)

#67 - 7 Pounds

Pro Tools
2008
GZA
Black Milk, Preservation

Classic vote: 53.85%

Black Milk seems to understand the Wu-Tang style as he has the sped up chipmunk samples down pat. One of the harder tracks on Pro Tools, GZA smoothly spits metaphor after metaphor in rapid succession.

#66 - DTD (Do the Dance)

No Said Date
2004
Masta Killa, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah
Mathematics
Samples:
Otid Redding - Try a Little Tenderness
Classic vote: 47.83%

Mathematics' brilliant composition with a chopped up Otis Redding sample, piano and brass is just what the doctor ordered for Ghost and Rae to guest star and shine.

#65 - Gun Will Go

8 Diagrams
2007
Raekwon, Method Man,
Masta Killa, Sunny Valentine
RZA
Classic vote: 48.89%

The subject of lively debate recently, many believe that this is the best track on 8 Diagrams while others just can't get past the chorus. RZA mixes simple strings with heavier classical ones on the hook that fluctuate between flowing and jagged like a bee buzzing. There is an interesting break on Masta's verse.

#64 - Chi Kung

Birth of a Prince
2003
RZA, Cilvaringz, Featherz

Barracuda
Classic vote: 50.00%

A Wu-Tang beat through and through, RZA with a gruff voice scratches his way through a couple of verses and hands off to Wu-Tang Corp's own Cilvaringz who proves he's not so bad with the vocals.

#63 - Afterparty

Tical 0 : The Prequel
2004
Method Man, Ghostface Killah

Q
Samples
The Detroit Emeralds - I Just Don't Know About This Girl
Classic vote: 50.00%

A hangover track about the hassles of throwing a party at your crib. It manages to be upbeat and above all hilarious, truly one of the funniest, most entertaining tracks the Wu have ever done.

#62 - God Is Love

Dopium
2009
U-God, Cappadonna, Killah Priest

Teddy Ted & J. Serbe
Classic vote: 50.00%

Cappadonna gives one of his more memorable performances providing a sharp verse and the hook, a familiar one by now. Voice samples and vibrating strings over guitar and piano give this track a rich overlapping sound.

#61 - The Heart Gently Weeps

8 Diagrams
2007
Raekwon, Ghostface killah, Method Man, Erykah Badu

RZA, George Drakoulias
Samples:
George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Classic vote: 51.11%

A big deal was made of this track prior to 8 Diagram's release and fans of Ghostface were not disappointed when they heard his inner city tale about being ambushed by a fiend in a Pathmark. John Frusciante from The Red Hot Chili Peppers and George's son Dhani Harrison provide guitar licks while Erykah Badu weeps on the chorus.

There really are so many quotables to sift through in this song that I could never do it justice, but I will mention "This language is so captivating that when we lose a rap nigga the news is devastating"

Masta picks a beat that's a definite Wu-banga, once again backed by Rae and Ghost. Clashing high brass and low guitar provide a powerful melody for the trio.

Classic vote: 47.50%

Forum pick:

J Dilla really understood the Wu-Tang sound like no other outside producer ever used by the Clan. Twanging asian strings and high shrieking violins on the break dominate this highly infectious beat.

#56 - Unstoppable Threats

Muggs

Samples:
Soft Touch - Look Up, Look Down
Classic vote: 58.06%

GZA rapping about being an emcee backed by Masta Killa and Killa Bee, Prodigal Sunn. Muggs provides a repetitive simple beat for GZA and his prodigy to rap over.

#55 - City High

The Movement
2003
Inspectah Deck
Fantom of the Beats
Classic vote: 60.00%

Inspectah Deck's City High is an upbeat tale chronicling the rise and eventual snub of this important artist. HOOing chorus and piano fill the background while Deck, as usual, tears up the lyrics.

#54 - The Champ

Fishscale
2006
Ghostface Killah
Just Blaze
Samples:
Wu-Tang Clan - Da Mystery of Chessboxin'
Melvin Bliss - Synthetic Substitution
Classic vote: 52.63%

Just Blaze drops a banger in Ghosts's lap in which the spirit of Rocky III is conjured. Champion brass and booming bass merge with electric guitar to make a rap anthem worthy of a boxing match introduction.

#53 - The Glide

4:21...The Day After
2006
Method Man, Raekwon, La the Darkman, U-God
RZA
Classic vote: 53.66%

There is no doubt RZA's production is the highlight of 4:21...The Day After. Killa bee, La the Darkman joins Rae, Mef and Uey in this brash Wu-Banga featuring blue strings, echoing piano, and soul screams.

#52 - It's a Wrap

Mr. Xcitement
2005
U-God, Leathafase
DJ Homicide
Classic vote: 77.78%

The lone choice from U-God's second solo album, It's a Wrap is a hard banger in which U-God and Leathafase trade jabs over a spastic beat. Bells and moans envelop the background making for an easily repeatable tune.

#51 - Must Be Bobby

Digital Bullet
2001
RZA
Mathematics
Classic vote: 62.86%

Taken from an asian string and percussion introduction to an easy piano loop, RZA spits metaphors and uses clever wordplay to hypnotize the listener. He brazenly states "I sold 20 million records bitch, some laugh"

#50-41

#50 - A Lil' Story

The Resident Patient
2006
Inspectah Deck
Cilvaringz
Classic vote: 87.50%

Taking the name of a Sherlock Holmes crime novel, The Resident Patient is filled with pop culture references and A Lil' Story in particular, which uses movie titles and actors names , is standout. Wu-Tang Corp's own Cilvaringz provides the beat filled with harp and high pitched vibrating strings.

#49 - The Hilton

Bulletproof Wallets
2001
Ghostface Killah, Raekwon
Carlos "6 July" Broady
Samples:
Jackson 5 - Maria

Classic vote: 58.33%

Ghostface and Raekwon tackle a beat by Carlos "6 July" Broady that features a Jackson 5 sample, electric keyboard synths, and banging bass hits. Ghost and Rae once again flip a yarn about the illegal life, never disappointing.

#48 - Groundbreaking

Pro Tools
2008
GZA, Justice Kareem
Bronze Nazareth
Classic vote: 61.54%

One of the heaviest, hardest tracks to come out of the Wu camp in years, Groundbreaking combines father and son finishing each other's lyrics and a banging bass line that resonates for days.

#47 - Advanced Pawns

Grandmasters
2005
GZA, Raekwon, RZA, Sen Dog
Muggs
Classic vote: 61.29%

Evoking memories of another Muggs/RZA/GZA collaboration, Third World, Advanced Pawns is both elegant and nasty. Warlike echoes over this regal beat set the mood perfectly for the emcees who provide great backing with their vocals.

#46 - The Sun

Hidden Darts (Bulletproof Wallets sample clearance issues)
2007
Ghostface Killah, Slick Rick, Raekwon, RZA
RZA
Classic vote: 58.33%

Possibly the cheeriest song the Clan have ever done, The Sun boasts old school rap veteran Slick Rick as a guest. Clarinet and happy strings adorn the melody by RZA, one of his finest productions ever.

#45 - Don't Be Afraid

Digi Snacks
2007
RZA
RZA
Classic vote: 58.82%

Low piano notes, hollow percussion, and vibrating synths provide a vibrant background for RZA to ride with his vocals. Easily one of the best songs from Digi Snacks, it's pretty inexplicable why this was labeled a bonus track.

#44 - Path of Destruction

Pro Tools
2008
GZA
Jay Waxx Garfield
Classic vote: 69.23%

Muffled trumpets and synthetic strings play off one another in harmony as GZA tells a tale about the path a youth can take which will lead to a sordid life. The track has a city feel, and GZA's lyrics while calm are very interesting.

#43 - Queens Gambit

Grandmasters
2005
GZA
Muggs

Classic vote: 64.52%

GZA follows the formula that made him a star, once again taking a theme (NFL team names) and using them to describe a woman. A slow classical piano loop plays the bulk of the work on the beat.

#42 - Stomp Da Roach

Dopium
2009
U-God, GZA, Scotty Wotty
Teddy Ted & J. Serbe
Classic vote: 55.56%

Another classic Wu-Tang loop is revisited comprised of asian strings and brass. Scotty Wotty shines giving credo to his past mentions by Ghostface. U-God's gruff voice carries the hook, in a very fulfilling song.

#41 - Ringin' Bells

Made in Brooklyn
2006
Masta Killa
Bronze Nazareth
Classic vote: 55.56%

The first single off Made in Brooklyn, Ringin' Bells mashes piano, guitar, and yes bells in an addictive banger produced by Bronze Nazareth. Although Masta Killa goes at it alone, he is up to the task, easily flowing nicely between audio clips on the hook.

#40-31

#40 - Silent

Legend of the Liquid Sword
2002
GZA, Ghostface Killah, Streetlife
Bink!
Classic vote: 52.17%

Hollow Dartz pick:

Although the beat is repetitive, it is entirely Wu, and the lyrics more than make up for any drawbacks. Ghost jumps off in monumental fashion brazenly stating "Look i got rid of the grays, took my hat off and the crowd went crazy, bitches through they panties, the sound man was fanning me, the whole place was standing G, what they chant 'We was family!'"

#39 - Do U

Digital Bullet
2001
RZA, Prodigal Sunn, GZA
RZA
Classic vote: 57.14%

Sexy strings used on the Forever album and muffled trumpet and piano chords guide a repeating 'do you' voice sample while Killa bee Prodigal Sunn, RZA and GZA flip the vocals.

#38 - The Forest

Bulletproof Wallets
2001
Ghostface Killah
The Alchemist
Classic vote: 70.83%

Accordions, tubas and flutes spark this lively creation by The Alchemist, in which Ghostface flips a ghetto yarn using cartoon characters as the players. If anything, it will remind people of their youth with all the references.

#37 - Guns N' Razors

More Fish
2006
Ghostface Killah, Trife, Cappadonna, Killa Sin
MF DOOM
Samples:
Spiderman - Villains Theme
Classic vote: 70.83%

Comic book fans are sure to love this little ditty, featuring a sample from Spider man. MF DOOM gives Ghost a track with heavy overlapping percussion and high brass. Everybody rips the lyrics.

#36 - What's Happenin'

Tical 0: The Prequel
2004
Method Man, Busta Rhymes
DJ Scratchator
Samples:
Asha Bholse - Dum Maro Dum
Classic vote: 73.53%

Although Tical 0 was essentially a failure in the eyes of fans and critics alike, it wasn't completely void of commercial success. Exhibit A: What's Happenin', a fan freindly hip hop joint joining legends Method Man and Busta Rhymes on the mic.

#35 - You Can't Stop Me Now

Digi Snacks
2008
RZA, Inspectah Deck
RZA, George Drakoulias
Samples:
Barret Strong, Norman Whitfield - Message from a Black Man
Classic vote: 76.47%

The biggest complaints about this record are it's multiple used sample and Deck's very weak first line. Other than that, it's a chilling banger with an interesting video to back it. The most popular track on an unpopular album.

#34 - Alphabets

Pro Tools
2008
GZA
True Master
Classic vote: 76.92%

A sick piano loop and moans with a simple drum kit is all that GZA needs to drop this clever rhyme in which he spits words in alphabetical order on the hook. GZA once again proves to be a brilliant word smith.

#33 - The Birth

Birth of a Prince
2008
RZA
Bronze Nazareth
Classic vote: 67.65%

One of the more solemn beats in the history of the clan, melancholy electric piano and woodwinds give way to a more hopeful strings in the interlude. RZA drops more 5% knowledge in this cut than he ever has before. An incredibly important track.

#32 - Vendetta

The Movement
2003
Inspectah Deck
Ayatollah
Classic vote: 46.67%

beautifulrock's pick:

One of the most overlooked tracks in the history of the clan, Vendetta suffers from being on an unpopular album. Three different hooks are wedged in between Deck's verses about industry retribution. Vibrant chorus and a wild west feel dominate this powerful track. Several top 10 votes boosted this track from the abyss, increasing it's popularity over the years. (somebody's finally listening to me)

#31 - State of Grace

Unreleased (Cut from Cuban Linx 2)
2005
Raekwon
RZA
Classic vote: 50.00%

Forum Pick:

Released long prior to the album it was supposed to be on, State of Grace didn't end up making the final cut, but it certainly wasn't forgotten. Featuring a popular Scarface sample and regal brass, this is one incredibly addicting track. On several top 10 lists.

Bruce Lee interview with Pierre Berton
Classic vote: 60.87%

The first of 4 Top 30 tracks from No Said Date, Masta Killa shines with asian strings both plucked and flowing and a very popular audio sample by Bruce Lee acting as the hook. Be water my friends.

#28 - Weak Spot

8 Diagrams
2007
RZA, Raekwon, GZA
RZA, George Drakoulias
Classic vote: 53.33%

Prolifical ENG's pick:

Understated percussion helps shuffle minimalist instrumentation along allowing the lyricists to be the focus on this dark brooding track. Kung Fu audio is splashed in between verses on the hook.

#27 - Pencil

Pro Tools
2008
GZA, Masta Killa,
RZA
Mathematics
Samples:
Velma Perkins - I'll Always love You
Classic vote: 76.92%

The classic sped up chipmunk sound is back, as Mathematics uses bells and a harmonium to stab at the track. The performers themselves also stab at the track lyrically, making for a sharp composition.

#26 - A Day to God is 1000 Years

Birth of a Prince
2003
RZA
Bronze Nazareth
Samples:
Chuck Mangione - Memories of Scirocco

Classic vote: 73.53%

A brilliant pan flute sample breezily provides the backdrop for RZA's 5% lyrics. RZA is at his best here, ripping through reference after reference on his way to musical enlightenment.

#25 -Black Mozart

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, RZA, Tash Mahogany
RZA
Samples:
The Professionals - Theme from the Godfather

Classic vote: 50.00%

Tekunique's pick:

Hard metal guitar riffs and dreary organ notes clash in this experimental success by the RZA. The harmony is matched by RZA's bizarre hooks and Rae and Deck's vivid drug
verses.

#24 - Run

The Pretty Toney Album
2004
Ghostface Killah, Jadakiss
RZA
Samples:
Les Baxter - Hogin Machine

Classic vote: 73.91%

RZA creates a sound which makes the listener feel like they're being chased. LOX member Jadakiss joins Ghostface to talk about being hunted by the boys in blue.

#23 - Campfire

8 Diagrams
2007
Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Cappadonna
RZA
Samples:
The Persuasions - Gypsy Woman
Shoalin & Wu-Tang movie dialogue
Classic vote: 57.78%

Forum pick:

The much talked about opening track off 8 Diagrams is dark and sinister, a campfire tale if you will. It's nice to have Cappa back after he was booted off Iron Flag.
The opener:
"
Today I'll talk about kindness
Justice, faith and kindness
I want you to listen carefully
Kindness and faith, are the foundation
Without them, we can't become good people
And with justice, we know we can lead a good life
And how can I be a good man then, eh?
Well, first of all, you have to practice honesty
Uhmm...
Keep your temper, never lose control of yourself
Keep control...

Be patient, if you learn to do these things, you can master anything"

#22 - Uzi (Pinky Ring)

Iron Flag
2001
U-God, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, GZA
RZA
Samples:
Clarence Reid - Nobody But You
JJ Johnson - Parade Strut
Classic vote: 71.79%

5 Minute anthem featuring all members except the incarcerated Dirty and the banished cab driver. Shouts of SUUUUUUUUU and sharp brass provide the background for a song with 8 verses that still manages to throw in a hook.

#21 - Windmill

8 Diagrams
2007
Raekwon, GZA, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, Cappadonna
RZA
Samples:

Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Classic vote: 57.78%

RZA takes everything he's learned over the years and combines it, in this slick Western/Kung Fu epic. The track rolls along like a steady train, so much so it's almost hypnotic. It demands multiple listens and not just for the beat, these are some of the best verses in years from the Wu.

#20-11

#20 - Radiant Jewels

Chamber Music
2009

Raekwon, Cormega, Sean Price
Fizzy Womack, Andrew Kelley, Noah Rubin
Classic vote: 62.86%

Dominating strings sweep across the track which features one of the best guest verses in years by Cormega:
"
When Pun was packing a mack in back of the Acura
I was dealing in the building, there wasn't no cameras
To witness savages, snitching was hazardous, now it isn't
Shit is embarrassing, fuck a flow, this is a lyrical aquaduct
Sink or swim for what I'm hearing you bagging up
Lyte like the MC, I'm 'paper thin', you tripping
I'm taking trips, your eyes don't lie, take a glimpse
Into my life, you see me blazing clips, with the green to make it rich
With a team that'll scrape the nicks, and a v that's crazy quick
I came to wear my Yankee fitted, represent for greatness
It's lyrical elevation, causing mental stimulation
If I'm getting too deep, I give you a minute to take in
My jewels radiant, like a view of the Caymans
And thinking you seeing me, who you playing with?
Cor, Mega, raw forever
Fell back, pause, fell off? Never"

#19 - Silverbacks

No said Date
2004

Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, GZA
True Master
Samples:
Albert King - I'll Play the Blues For You part I

Classic vote: 71.74%

Pandemic's pick:

Blues organ, bass guitar and an easy beat take a back seat to lyrics as Inspectah Deck blazes the track, Masta never misses a step, and GZA lays waste to the finale.

#18 - Kiss the Ring

Only Built for Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa

Scram Jones
Samples:
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Classic vote: 57.50%

beautifulrock's pick:

An interpolation of Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road chorus creates an addicting loop, combined with Deck's amazing hook and top notch verses by all emcees, it's easy to see why this song made many top 10 lists.

#17 - Brooklyn Babies

Digital Bullet
2001
RZA, Masta Killa, The Force MD's

RZA
Classic vote: 77.14%

The crown jewel of digital bullet, Brooklyn Babies features experimental production by RZA where an oscillating beat is sped up and slowed down on the chorus and The Force MD's follow suit.

#16 - No Said Date

No Said Date
2004
Masta Killa

RZA
Samples:
Herry Mancini - Police Woman Theme
Classic vote: 73.91%

One of RZA's best beats and Masta Killa's best verses, No Said Date's title track is MK's best solo easily. Usually a methodical rapper, Masta speeds up to rapid fire flow in between an addicting Pan Flute hook with repeating no said date...

#15 - Fam (Members Only)

Legend of the Liquid Sword
2002
GZA, RZA, Masta Killa

Mathematics
Samples:
Gladys Knight and the Pips - Between Her Goodbye and My Hello

Classic vote: 86.96%

The runaway poll winner from Legend, Fam uses woodwinds, bells and Kung Fu sound effects to captivate the listener, and brash lyrics by RZA, GZA, and MK. All the old school tricks are utilized by Math on the beat.

#14 - Biscuits

The Pretty Toney Album
2004
Ghostface Killah, Trife

True Master
Samples:
Sam and Dave -
I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down
Classic vote: 86.96%

High grand piano notes accompanied by a muffled horn sample provide the upbeat atmosphere for this extremely visually descriptive ghost song, one of the best True Master productions. An off key hook which Ghost has used before effectively (Theodore) drives the chorus, which demands a loud sing along.
"Call ya bluff, ya'll faggots don't want no beef, grind ya teeth and just roll with it, don't risk it, fuck around a be a statistic..."
Both the hook and the beat are very addictive as is Trife's verse which to me is his breakout record, showing just how good he can be, and is a clear reason why Trife has become Ghost's affiliate wing-man.

#13 - Street Corner

Made in Brooklyn
2004
Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, GZA

Bronze Nazareth
Classic vote: 75.00%

Slow steady strings anchor this melancholy account of hood life. It warns of a coming revolution but laments at the fact that the world will probably drag on as is forever. Flashbacks from Deck, GZA, and MK make this a reminiscent favorite.

#12 - Train Trussle

Dopium
2009
U-God, Ghostface Killah, Scotty Wotty

Teddy Ted & J. Serbe

Classic vote: 77.78%

The first single from Dopium opens with a famous Mike Tyson quote, and the first glimpse of Scotty Wotty, subject of previous mention by Ghostface. Whether it was the smooth brass, Wotty, or the fact they were amped about Uey's guest appearances on the past couple albums, fans overwhelmingly nominated this the best track on Dopium.

#11 - The Turn

Tical 0 : The Prequel
2004
Raekwon, Method Man

RZA
Samples:
The Miracles -
Where Are You Going To My Love?
Classic vote: 82.35%

The only RZA laced track on the despised Tical 0: is a huge fan favorite. Flute and Jingle Bells entrance the listener while Rae and Mef in particular drop loads of lyrical fire.
"

#10 - School

No Said Date

Masta Killa, RZA
RZA
Sample:
Dialog from Good Times
Classic vote: 73.91%

This selection from No Said Date drops a fierce amount of knowledge especially by Rza. I love any song where the beat transitions flawlessly and this is no exception. The two beats have absolutely no relationship to one another but rather to the MCs spitting on them. A brilliant idea.

#9 - Presidential MC

4:21...The Day After
2006
Method Man, Raekwon, RZA
RZA
Sample:
Harry Nilsson - Rainmaker
Classic vote: 78.05%

Forum pick:

This offering from 4:21 is an example of the perfect meld of lyric/hook/beat. It all fits perfectly like the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Rza sounds crazy with his monotonistic verse but it works just fine. Hook is mellow and repeatable.

#8 -Iron God Chamber

Made in Brooklyn

Masta Killa, Method Man, U-God, RZA
Whyz Ruler
Classic vote: 80.56%

Forum pick:

Virtual unknown producer Whyz Ruler provides Masta Killa with one of the best beats of the new century. Screeching brass and soulful moans form the pounding beat, while U-God has easily one of his best lyrical performances all time in the jump off position. Every verse is classic, and the beat encompasses the Wu-Tang sound.

#7 -Sound of the Slums

The Resident Patient
2006
Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa
Concrete Beats
Classic vote: 91.67%

A smash hit according to the corp, this beat with echoed synths and booming bass resonated loudly with the voters, garnering the highest percentage of classic votes in the new century. At just over two minutes long, it's another short but sweet masterpiece, with Deck and MK destroying the vocals.

#6 -House of Flying Daggers

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, GZA
J Dilla
Classic vote: 62.50% (1)

Wade's pick:

A surprising result in the polls, House of flying daggers finished 2nd on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 and earns the 6th spot on our countdown. The late J Dilla knew what kind of sound Rae wanted for the album and provided him with 3 classics. The verses are all amazing. Method Man puts in his best work in years on this song and album.

#5 - R.A.G.U.

Fishscale
2006
Raekwon, Ghostface Killah
Pete Rock
Samples:
The Delphonics - The Look of Love
Classic vote: 76.32%

Rae and Ghost unite. Strings you could imagine being part of a 60's love story score are highlighted with refreshing bass/drum-hits, providing the backdrop for some good ol' R.A.G.U. storytelling. Both verses mesh together and harmonize like in the OBFCL days so well, they could be written by one MC.

#4 - Y'all Been Warned

Iron Flag
2001
Method Man, RZA, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, Masta Killa
True Master
Samples:
Barbara and the Browns
Classic vote: 66.67%

Hollow Dartz pick:

A repeating beat of hollow brass and birdlike strings fit for Killarmy rolls along while Mef jumps off
and provides one of the better, tougher hooks in the collective. A huge jump from the overall list, this song was boosted by several Top 5 votes.

#3 - Wolves

8 Digrams
2007
U-God, Method Man, Masta Killa, George Clinton
RZA
Classic vote: 66.67%

beautifulrock's pick:

RZA pulls out all the stops on the production front as he mashes samples from Kill Bill, Western whistles, and a spooky P-funk chorus with George Clinton's spastic hook
"A dog is a dog is a dog is a dog
Unlike the wolf, who made a widower of Grandpa"

A jungle of musical atmosphere consisting of an almost eerie choir singing in the back and a whistle that makes the beat feathery but rich in content. Great verses from all 3 generals, but U-God definitely shows why RZA said his delivery on this album is pure quality.

#2 - New Wu

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...part II
2009
Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Method Man

RZA
Samples:
The Magictones - I've Changed
Classic vote: 65.00%

Consensus #2

The highest polling track on Cuban Linx 2, with the most #2 votes overall, New Wu jump started the Cuban Linx hype when the single and video were released. What is so amazing about this beat is how simple it is. It's a mid-nineties hip hop drum kit with a repeating Wu Ooh chorus. Method Man's hook is extremely addicting and the verses are all smashes.

#1 - Iron Flag

Iron Flag
2001
Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Method Man

RZA
Classic vote: 66.67% (3)

Consensus #1

Iron flag is one of the greatest hip hop beats I've ever heard. You are intro'ed into the song greeted by Raekwon and the all familiar sped up "oh man" as well as scratches, and those scratches eventually expose 3 words "iron flag brothers". That's your hook and that's all you need. The strings are beautiful and when weaved to the percussion create a complexity that demands to be heard over and over and over.....
