Kon did a series called Paranoia Agent which shares a lot in common with Paprika and Perfect Blue. The whole thing is like a fever dream with multiple clashing perspectives and metaphorical visuals. Thats easy to recommend, it definitely fits the mindfuck theme although I can't remember if its really dark like Perfect Blue.

will def check it out then. it was one of the animes that came up under similar things for Lain. i didnt start it because the little teddy bear on the front and all that made it seem like it wasnt gonna be dark.

    but the premise sounds promising.

not watching any notable anime atm so i can start up a new one.

also must check out Kon's Millennium Actress have yet to watch that one. heard that it is very similar to Perfect Blue except... not as dark lol.

gotta cruise through this thread again for some good flicks been removed from film as of late just been a lot of anime. lolzzzz

I watched the Scarlett Johansson film last night. It was a trip, and intriguing, but I wasn't really much into it. My favourite kind of movies r mind fuck ones where u don't really know what's happening, but the good ones r the ones where u really WANNA KNOW what's happening. This one was somewhere in between. I was interested but not overly, and certainly not captivated or engrossed.

    Worth watching tho.

I also dig Scarlett n think she's hot as fuck.

The movie doesn't give any answers, so even if you really wanted to know, you wouldn't. My favorite Sci-Fi's are the ones like that that are really about possibilities, predictions, the gaping hole at the heart of existence, confronting the unknown/unknowable, what it means to be alive.

I rewatched The Witch a few days ago, and I feel like thats in the same category - maybe you can't call it Sci-Fi, but there's similar themes in terms of the dread of the unknown and people being helpless figures in the face of greater forces.

Yeah Sha, I worded my post shit. My fave films don't give answers either. But they engross me in wtf is this all about, even tho I know there's no answers to be found. David lynch films like Mulholland drive, lost highway, and inland empire r my absolute faves, and I'm pretty sure they're not even supposed to make sense, especially inland empire. But they captivate the fuck out of me n make me think hard n WANT TO make sense of the madness.

Yeah I think the great thing about more philosophical, open ended stuff is that you have to do some thinking to get a meaning or a feeling about them.

I watched Eraserhead a few weeks ago - I think its some sort of metaphor about abortion, societal pressure and what have you but I'm sure I need another viewing. Entertaining though. Inland Empire is really opaque, even for David Lynch it gives you very little steady ground. The Twin Peaks comeback was dope - definitely in the realm of mindfuck and cosmic horror.

I still haven't even watch the twin peaks comeback, which is appalling. I think I have it on a hard drive. I need to act on that.

I'm pretty sure everything in Eraserhead was metaphorical. I remember reading some very plausible explanations for it online, back in the day.

I'm pretty sure I once read or heard David lynch speaking about inland empire n saying it wasn't intended as any kind of cohesive narrative or anything, but rather just a visual experience.

I'm a big fan of ambiguity and having the freedom to find my own meaning in things. I write a lot of lyrics in that fashion.

I can't believe the playstation Pluto TV app was streaming this movie. Probably had the most brutal rape and beating scene ever made in film history.

^^true, the movie was very controversial upon its release

I saw it and thought it was decent. the violence in it is uncomfortably realistic, which is something you hardly ever see in movies. this realism contrasts well with the reverse chronology set up of the movie imo

I think principal actors Vincent Cassel and Monica Belluci were dating (or were married) at the time

if you enjoyed Cassel's acting I can recommend the 2008 two-part* biopic 'Mesrine', which he stars in. Mesrine was a high profile criminal. lots of suspense and action, and definitely some good acting

This German film is pretty damn creepy. The guy is an ecologist in the wilderness who checks his game cameras and tracks animals with satellite connected video collars which lead him to the cursed village.

have not seen that Across the River. but for some reason it reminded of this...

    Borgman

i came across this on Hulu one day and i still stand behind it being the best movie i have watched on that streaming service since.

very open ended and kinda strange. i highly enjoyed it. and have recommended it before irl but some people dont like subtitles smh
