    Default Favourite Guitarists

No set number or anything. Just who are your faves?

    Mine...

    1. David Gilmour
    2. Roy Buchanan
    3. Albert Collins
    4. Mark Knopfler

Those are the ones who really get my pussy wet, and have the most influence on my own playing (not so much Knopfler). Other faves are Albert King, T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter, Ronnie Earl (heard him for the first thyme this morning, but instantly a big fan). Still like Clapton a lot too.

Pretty obvious I'm into blues guitar. Also a big fan of John Fahey and Nick Drake for their acoustic folk guitar playing. Nick Drake moreso for his approach to writing songs on guitar than anything else.

Harry Manx for his acoustic slide playing.

I would encourage people to check out Roy Buchanan, who to me is quite possibly the greatest lead guitar player ever. Also Albert Collins who had a unique approach to playing blues lead guitar, which produced a fucking awesome sound.

This next one is an absolute fucking masterclass in lead guitar playing. This is with no pedals or effects or anything. Just an absolute genius and his telecaster. Obviously heavily improvised too. One of my favourite tracks of all thyme...

A couple of awesome Albert Collins shows...

The solo at the start of this song is probably my favourite piece of guitar ever. This is what's meant when somebody refers to a guitarist's "touch" (which is the most important aspect of lead guitar playing imo, and why I will take Gilmour and Buchanan over guys like Hendrix and Page any day of the week).

Gilmour's touch is unparalleled by anybody else I've heard. Listen to the way this guy solos on an acoustic guitar. His control is ridiculous.

as i don't know anything about music + can't play guitar, i can't really comment with any certainty about who the best guitarist is etc. But i'd agree with Dave Gilmour, based solely on the fact that the sounds he made with Pink Floyd were consistently amazing. prince is probably the best guitarist of all time. I don't know/don't care to know enough about musicians to know what guitarists played all the prog/kraut rock i enjoy, but i particularly like that kind of guitar work (repetitive, chugging kind of stuff that slowly evolves over 10 minutes) and how it morphed with things like Post Punk and eventually Math Rock etc. In line with that, i really enjoy the guitar on Mogwai records, but i have no idea who plays what....some guitar playing that i've been appreciating quite a bit recently is that of Sun Kil Moon douche Mark Kozelek. what would you say about his technical aptitude noel? i really have no idea, sounds alright to me though, i'll have to check out this buchanan character, never heard of the guy before honestly:

what would you say makes a guitarist good to you bro????

playing at the start of the first track & on that second track is great - first time hearing anything off The Division Bell for me (my fears re. vocals/lyrics are confirmed)

Cool mate. I'll check out this stuff tomorrow hopefully. I'm no expert or anything. I just play and really love the instrument.

Lolz before I got into guitar I thought DB was pretty lame. Now it's the Floyd album I listen to most (albeit minus 3 tracks, which brings it down to the 45 odd minutes it should've been). Gilmour's best playing is on that album, as well as his 'On an Island' and 'Live in Gdansk' albums.

As for what makes a guitarist good to me, like I say I think touch is most important. Style. What you do with a note. How you go into and out of a note. One note played by David Gilmour is worth more than a full album of most flashy, super fast metal guitarists. Fuck that rubbish. I like guitarists who express something through their playing. Listen to 'Sweet Dreams' and 'The Messiah Will Come Again' by Roy Buchanan. He's expressing more with his guitar than almost anybody could through words. That's what I look for and what impresses me.

You don't have to play guitar or understand music to know who a good guitarist is. If you're connecting to their music then they're doing their job right.

Man this shit is just too fucking awesome to comprehend. I actually often think the whole thing is completely spontaneous and improvised. Certainly the second half. In the second half it basically just sounds like he's trying all different ideas. Reaching into his bag of tricks, pulling something out, trying it for a few bars, then abandoning it and pulling something different out. His absolutely mastery of the guitar is on full display in this track. I am so fucking grateful this track made it onto an album. It's an absolutely priceless recording to have.

Just repeating. No pedals or effects used in this track (or almost any other recordings he did). He is creating all of those sounds with nothing but his hands, his Telecaster, and an endless supply of mind bending skill and talent.

Buckethead is really fuc'n good. Electric tears and electric sea r fuc'n fantastic. A lot of his stuff I've looked at I don't like one little bit. The Metal and shred stuff. Shred guitar is an abomination. I dl'ed a video of a long concert of him n didn't like anything he played, lolz.

But yeah, he's an enormously talented player. And those 2 albums r fantastic. I fux wit' population override and colma too.
